Moldova\u2019s parliament has appointed Alexandru Munteanu as the new prime minister to lead the country\u2019s push to join the European Union and move away from Russia\u2019s influence.<\/p>\n
Munteanu, a 61-year-old economist, was chosen after President Maia Sandu\u2019s ruling Party of Action and Solidarity won decisively in September.<\/p>\n
He received support from 55 out of 101 lawmakers during the parliamentary vote. Munteanu\u2019s government will face economic challenges and high inflation linked to Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine. Joining the EU will require significant reforms, including improvements to the judiciary and energy systems.<\/p>\n
Munteanu, who has international experience and holds multiple citizenships, identified his government\u2019s main goals as \u201cEU, peace, growth. \u201d He also indicated that resolving the long-standing conflict with the pro-Russian separatist Transdniestria region is a priority, asserting that there is a current opportunity to address this issue.<\/p>\n
