{"id":540775,"date":"2025-10-31T22:48:21","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T22:48:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/540775\/"},"modified":"2025-10-31T22:48:21","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T22:48:21","slug":"now-britain-set-to-hand-more-than-50billion-to-eu-under-brexit-deal-in-what-reform-call-slap-in-the-face-to-uk-taxpayers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/540775\/","title":{"rendered":"Now Britain set to hand more than \u00a350billion to EU under Brexit deal in what Reform call &#8216;slap in the face&#8217; to UK taxpayers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"author-section byline-plain\">By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/profile-846\/david-churchill.html\" class=\"author\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DAVID CHURCHILL, CHIEF POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT<\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"byline-section\"> Published:  18:00 EDT, 31 October 2025   |  Updated:  18:05 EDT, 31 October 2025   <\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Post-Brexit payments to Brussels are set to top an eye-watering \u00a350billion in a \u2018slap in the face\u2019 to taxpayers, it emerged today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Figures released by the Office for National Statistics (<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/ons\/index.html\" id=\"mol-b4cacbd0-b69f-11f0-9930-edcb6a396f24\" rel=\"noopener\">ONS<\/a>) showed the UK handed over \u00a33.25billion to Eurocrats last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It took the total Britain has paid to the <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/european-union\/index.html\" id=\"mol-b4c7be90-b69f-11f0-9930-edcb6a396f24\" rel=\"noopener\">European Union<\/a> since leaving in 2020 to around \u00a344billion, according to the statistics agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">And the Government has committed to handing over another \u00a38billion or so under the terms of the exit deal, meaning post-Brexit payments in total are set to surge past \u00a350billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The sum far exceeds what previous governments have claimed they were willing to pay to leave the bloc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Critics today said it was an insult to hard-pressed households who are potentially facing more tax hikes in the Budget in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Former Tory Brexit minister David Jones, who has since defected to Reform UK, said: \u2018This is nothing less than a slap in the face to all the hard-working Britons who are currently struggling with a cost-of-living crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018The European Union should no longer be the recipient of funds from this country as far as I\u2019m concerned.<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-b92ddc88c267fa2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/103497909-15247553-image-a-14_1761947426788.jpg\" height=\"406\" width=\"634\" alt=\"\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">Britain has paid around \u00a344billion to the European Union since leaving in 2020. Pictured: European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018I think we were so desperate to get out of the EU that at the time we basically came up with a very bad deal.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Frank Furedi, boss of the MCC Brussels think-tank, said: \u2018Our negotiators have been taken for a ride and basically had no idea how to play hardball, which is what you need to do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018As far as they were concerned they just wanted an easy life and they didn\u2019t particularly care about the financial consequences of this. As far as the EU Commission is concerned, they\u2019re laughing all the way to the bank because they got a very good financial deal out of this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018It\u2019s a tragedy that we\u2019ve let all this money slide out of our hands and handed it over to the EU.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The majority of the settlements relate to the bill for leaving the EU, which Britain agreed to pay under the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement after exiting the bloc in January 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Originally, the settlement was estimated to be around \u00a335billion to \u00a339billion. In July 2021, Downing Street rejected an EU estimate of a total bill of nearly \u00a341billion and said it would be less.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Much of these payments relate to things that the UK committed to while it was a member of the EU but had not yet funded.
