{"id":541723,"date":"2025-11-01T09:11:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T09:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/541723\/"},"modified":"2025-11-01T09:11:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T09:11:10","slug":"east-london-borough-newham-is-the-worst-place-in-england-for-littering-in-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/541723\/","title":{"rendered":"East London Borough Newham Is The Worst Place In England For Littering in 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From\u00a0cigarette butts and <a href=\"http:\/\/timeout.com\/uk\/city-life\/britain-got-hooked-on-nicotine-pouches\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nicotine pouches<\/a>\u00a0to snack packets and\u00a0greasy takeaway tubs,\u00a0you don\u2019t really have to walk very far in London before\u00a0spotting\u00a0rubbish\u00a0strewn\u00a0across the street.\u00a0So, it probably won\u2019t come as much of a surprise that a London borough has just been named and shamed as the worst place in all of England for littering.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Property agent Sell House Fast sent freedom of information requests to each London borough and 50 of the biggest towns and cities outside of the capital to find out how many fixed penalty notices (FPNs) they\u00a0handed\u00a0out for littering between 2022 and 2024. Based on the data that came back, it crowned the borough of\u00a0<strong>Newham<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/england\/things-to-do\/best-things-to-do-in-england\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">England\u2019s<\/a> litter capital.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The research found that the people of Newham have received nearly 50,000 fines for\u00a0chucking\u00a0rubbish on the street\u00a0over the past three years (not including fly tipping). That equates to 13,319\u00a0penalties per 100,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>Home to Westfield Stratford,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/sport-and-fitness\/queen-elizabeth-olympic-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Queen Elizabeth\u00a0Olympic Park<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/news\/the-tiny-underrated-london-airport-that-has-been-named-best-in-the-uk-090925\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London City Airport<\/a>, there are more than 1,800 public bins in Newham and rubbish collections every week. The borough hands out fines\u00a0of \u00a3150 for\u00a0littering (including dropping cigarette and chewing gum), and more serious or unpaid offences\u00a0can lead to prosecution. Even spitting is included in\u00a0its street litter crackdown.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Its\u00a0high levels of\u00a0rubbish dumping\u00a0could be down to its population density \u2013 at 25,000 people per square mile, its the eighth most densely popular area in England.\u00a0Sells House Fast said that this \u2018creates a higher volume of waste, which can be more difficult for the council to effectively manage\u2019 and added that other factors like limited resources, public perception of littering as normal and a lack of community pride may also be contributing to the problem.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Newham\u00a0eclipses all other\u00a0English cities in its number of littering reports. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/manchester\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manchester<\/a> was named the second worst place in the UK for rubbish dumping, with roughly 35,000 penalties in the last three years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In response to the report, John Whitworth, Newham Council\u2019s cabinet member for climate emergency, air quality and environment, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/london\/newham-crowned-littering-capital-britain-b1255197.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Standard<\/a>: \u2018These figures show the task Newham Council is facing.
