For too long, she added,<strong> <\/strong>there had been too little thought for <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/jeffrey-epstein?srsltid=AfmBOor6XYev5mqJzxnvEXTAYpUtw5SQ_UHyF7wmKkZMX0doXE-meVEI&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeffrey Epstein\u2019s<\/a> victims.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a genuinely shameful situation that has been allowed to continue, not just in recent years, but for a very long time.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u2018It never sat easy with Charles\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Friends of the monarch dispute the narrative this is all about William, insisting that if Charles had got his way Andrew would have been forced into relative exile years before. But his mother, they say, indulged Andrew and was often easily influenced by him.<\/p>\n<p>One senior royal source said: \u201cThis has never sat easy with [Charles]\u2026 He has had to pick up the pieces. He would never want to disrespect his dear mama\u2026 but those are the facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But behind the scenes some sources have given the impression that William was unhappy with his father\u2019s initial decision to persuade Andrew to stop using his duke of York title and honours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWilliam was unhappy but so was Charles,\u201d the source said, adding that there was shared recognition of the need to spend time these past weeks consulting legal and constitutional experts on the best way forward.<\/p>\n<p>Queen Camilla\u2019s role<\/p>\n<p>Others have a slightly different perspective. Robert Jobson, who has written biographies of both William and Charles, noted that the statement issued by Buckingham Palace on Thursday evening contained a reference to <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/camilla-parker-bowles?srsltid=AfmBOor1SLkIZ_ccyGa0N-Uwmzr9OMy3a6cSTUFDFKQde3_IIqvTxs0y&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Queen Camilla<\/a>, who like her sister-in-law Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, has <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/king-charles-queen-camilla-sex-abuse-survivors-andrew-4013897?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">championed the victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was interesting that the statement came from the King and Queen, given the Queen\u2019s work on domestic abuse and sexual violence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>But he also detected the hand of William and the tectonic plates shifting. \u201cAt the moment, there is a shift with the <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/opinion\/prince-william-make-monarchy-unrecognisable-3955256?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">future of the monarchy<\/a> in view. <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/king-charles-challenges-living-cancer-3668442?srsltid=AfmBOook6R7aYHOo2w4my9b29Xefp_KND8Epz4sAvKRlcgRRvsndMAsZ&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The King has cancer<\/a> and William must be saying, \u2018I want this matter resolved. The two made history when they\u00a0prayed together in the Sistine Chapel (Photo: Vatican Media\/AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Palace officials have said the King\u2019s cancer is a managed condition and his treatment is moving in a positive direction. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018The Palace has got it right\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The tipping point for the <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/royal-family?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Family<\/a>, according to several sources, was an email published three weeks ago that seemed to contradict what Andrew had said in his <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/opinion\/how-i-found-prince-andrews-sweet-spot-and-secured-the-infamous-newsnight-interview-1750247?srsltid=AfmBOopOxlTj92GBNcZCCfpjGQ-XkIVxk4dM--b1SptSP5CEjyL0JC2P&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019 BBC Newsnight interview<\/a> about cutting off his friendship with Epstein after visiting him in New York in 2010. <\/p>\n<p>The email showed that in February 2011 he had told Epstein to keep in touch and added: \u201cWe\u2019ll play some more soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This coupled with further allegations that Andrew had asked his Scotland Yard protection officer to dig up dirt on <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/virginia-giuffre?srsltid=AfmBOoq1WBvehJrIvBXWDY0FDYu1waU9NfErkMYkBXAM0lzVnK_mu6_T&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virginia Giuffre<\/a>, the woman who said she was trafficked to have sex with him when she was 17 \u2013 an allegation the former duke strongly denies.<\/p>\n<p>The publication of <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/world\/key-claims-virginia-giuffres-memoir-epstein-prince-andrew-3989056?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Giuffre\u2019s posthumous memoir<\/a> only added to the sense inside the Palace that it was time to act.<\/p>\n<p>Lauren Beeching, a crisis PR expert, said the royals had for too long clung to the late Queen\u2019s mantra of never complain, never explain.
