{"id":544600,"date":"2025-11-02T17:34:14","date_gmt":"2025-11-02T17:34:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/544600\/"},"modified":"2025-11-02T17:34:14","modified_gmt":"2025-11-02T17:34:14","slug":"killings-internet-shutdown-during-tanzanias-election-extremely-concerning-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/544600\/","title":{"rendered":"Killings, internet shutdown during Tanzania&#8217;s election \u2018extremely\u2019 concerning: EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">The European Union has expressed concerns over violence, internet shutdown, and a large number of killings and injuries during and after Tanzania\u2019s election.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Sunday, the High Representative of the European Union, on behalf of the bloc, also expressed displeasure over irregularities in Tanzania\u2019s electoral process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe EU is very concerned with the events that occurred throughout the election day and that are still ongoing, including violence and the internet shutdown, as well as reports of irregularities in the election process in some places. Reliable reports of a large number of fatalities and significant injuries are of extreme concern,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The EU urged Tanzanian authorities to exercise maximum restraint to preserve human lives, stating, \u201cLack of a level playing field in the run-up to the elections was marked by reports of abductions and disappearances and violence limiting the civic and democratic space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It added, \u201cThe EU calls for the release of all detained politicians and for a transparent and fair trial of those arrested on a sound legal basis and for swift and thorough investigations into all reported incidents of abductions, disappearances, and violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The EU\u2019s statement echoes a joint statement by the UK, Canadian, and Norwegian missions in Tanzania, expressing similar concern over \u201ca large number\u201d of killings recorded during the country\u2019s election on Wednesday as security operatives brutally cracked down on protesters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are concerned by the situation in Tanzania following the national elections of 28 and 29 October,\u201d the joint statement said. \u201cThere are credible reports of a large number of fatalities and significant injuries as a result of the security response to protests, which began on 29 October.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Respective statements by the EU, UK, Canadian, and Norwegian missions confirmed Amnesty International\u2019s report that \u201can unopposed, unchecked, unjust wave of terror\u201d sweeps through the country ahead of the elections, lamenting \u201ca deepening human rights crisis ahead of its October 2025 general elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The human rights organisation said Tanzania\u2019s \u201cauthorities have intensified the use of repressive laws to silence dissent, targeting journalists, civil society, human rights defenders, and opposition voices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Tanzania\u2019s Independent National Electoral Commission on Saturday\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gazettengr.com\/tanzanias-president-wins-re-election-with-98-votes-amid-bloody-protests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declared President Samia Suluhu Hassan the winner\u00a0<\/a>of the controversial election.<\/p>\n<p>Tanzania\u2019s electoral commission\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gazettengr.com\/electoral-commission-clears-tanzanian-president-disqualifies-rivals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declared on Saturday that Mrs Hassan won the election\u00a0<\/a>with nearly 98 per cent of the votes.<\/p>\n<p>Tanzanians have been hitting the streets in protests since Wednesday over the general election.
