{"id":544973,"date":"2025-11-02T21:59:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-02T21:59:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/544973\/"},"modified":"2025-11-02T21:59:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-02T21:59:12","slug":"shop-could-lose-licence-over-underage-sale-and-illicit-items","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/544973\/","title":{"rendered":"Shop could lose licence over underage sale and illicit items"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aiir-c-news-figure__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/6907bf9e92e4c.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"aiir-c-news-article__abstract\">\n            A shop could lose its licence after it was caught selling alcohol and an illegal vape to a child.\n        <\/p>\n<p>John\u2019s Booze in Jowetts Lane, West Bromwich, will have its licence reviewed by Sandwell Council after searches found hundreds of wrongly labelled cigarettes, illicit erectile dysfunction tablets, banned chewing tobacco and prohibited oversized vapes at the shop.<\/p>\n<p>A child was also sold an oversized vape and a can of rum in an undercover sting.<\/p>\n<p>A search by Sandwell\u2019s trading standards in May found 280 packets of incorrectly labelled cigarettes, seven bags of banned cool lip pouches, nearly 100 sachets of gel sildenafil \u2013 the trademark name for Viagra \u2013 as well as two samurai swords and two machetes.<\/p>\n<p>The shop\u2019s licence was also not on display and Mr Bagri could not produce CCTV footage when requested. The shop\u2019s layout had also been changed without permission.<\/p>\n<p>Sandwell Council\u2019s licensing committee meets in Oldbury on November 10 to make a decision.<\/p>\n<p>The licensing report said the shop had been the subject a number of complaints whereby the owner was accused of selling single cigarettes and oversized vapes to children.<\/p>\n<p>A parent had also complained to Sandwell Council that her 16-year-old daughter had bought alcohol from the shop using a fake ID on several occasions.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Kay Millar and Cllr Paul Moore, who represent the Hateley Heath ward, said the row of shops in Jowett\u2019s Lane, near Phoenix Collegiate, one of the West Midlands\u2019 biggest secondary schools, were home to drug-dealing on a \u201clarge scale\u201d and John\u2019s Booze had been accused by locals of selling alcohol, vapes and cigarettes to children as well as \u2018under the counter\u2019 items such as banned Viagra and chewing tobacco.<\/p>\n<p>The shop is also half a mile from Sandwell Community School \u2013 home to students who have been permanently excluded or are at risk of being permanently excluded from school.<\/p>\n<p>In support of the licensing review, the two Labour councillors said: \u201cThis business operates a stone\u2019s throw away from a large secondary school across the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s extremely accessible to young people in particular.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs councillors we know that drug dealing is happening all over the ward but it\u2019s prevalent, and in close proximity, to this row of shops.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYoung people are dealing after school and are attracted by and to gang identity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also an attractive easy access way for adults to access these products.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s local, available and discrete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The shop, which opens from 7am to midnight every day, is run by licence holder Samanpreet Singh Bagri.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, another search of the shop found more than 80 oversized vapes and nearly 800 cool lip pouches.<\/p>\n<p>A single cigarette was also sold to an undercover officer in 2024 which resulted in a further search of the shop.<\/p>\n<p>The inspection found oversized vapes, banned chewing tobacco, prohibited erectile dysfunction tablets as well as open packs of cigarettes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A shop could lose its licence after it was caught selling alcohol and an illegal vape to a&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":544974,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7820],"tags":[22440,22441,855,9163,22439,748,9444,1354,393,9453,4884,14987,269,12,3669,9440,93,16823,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-544973","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-birmingham","8":"tag-102-5","9":"tag-102-5-fm","10":"tag-birmingham","11":"tag-black-country","12":"tag-brierley-hill","13":"tag-britain","14":"tag-dab","15":"tag-dudley","16":"tag-england","17":"tag-fm","18":"tag-great-britain","19":"tag-halesowen","20":"tag-music","21":"tag-news","22":"tag-online","23":"tag-radio","24":"tag-sport","25":"tag-stourbridge","26":"tag-uk","27":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/544973","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=544973"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/544973\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/544974"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=544973"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=544973"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=544973"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
