{"id":54529,"date":"2025-04-27T10:36:10","date_gmt":"2025-04-27T10:36:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/54529\/"},"modified":"2025-04-27T10:36:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-27T10:36:10","slug":"royal-navy-alerted-after-russian-warship-spotted-in-the-english-channel-news-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/54529\/","title":{"rendered":"Royal Navy alerted after Russian warship spotted in the English Channel | News UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"646\" height=\"439\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SEI_248939094-4a59-e1745741401408.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22980682\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThe Royal\u2019s Navy\u2019s Merlin helicopter monitoring the<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>RFN Admiral Golovoko from the air (Picture: Royal Navy)<\/p>\n<p>A British warship and helicopter were sent to escort a Russian frigate out of the English Channel for the second time this month.<\/p>\n<p>Putin\u2019s warship the RFN Admiral Golovko was spotted \u2018prowling\u2019 near the UK, the Royal Navy said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royalnavy.mod.uk\/news\/2025\/april\/26\/250425-royal-navy-warships-hms-st-albans-and-hms-mersey-track-russian-warships-in-uk-waters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a statement<\/a> yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>They said HMS St Albans was sent from <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/plymouth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plymouth<\/a> to respond to the Russian warship, which has been out on operations since November last year, as it headed east. <\/p>\n<p>The British warship launched a Merlin helicopter to gather information form the air, \u2018before handing over escorting duties to NATO allies as Golovoko continued its journey from the Mediterranean.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>HMS St Albans Commanding Officer, Matt Teare, said: \u2018HMS St Albans is at very high readiness to operate whenever, and wherever, the nation needs us in the protection of our home and the waters surrounding it.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We have twice been activated in recent weeks to conduct this type of operation and I am extremely proud of the professionalism of my crew and their tireless dedication to keeping our nation safe.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"477\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SEI_248938894-f3ea.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22980684\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tBritish warship HMS St Albans pictured in the foreground, with RFN Admiral Golovko in the background (Picture: Royal Navy)<\/p>\n<p>It was the second such activation for the warship this month, having monitored the Russian corvette \u2013 a fast, manoueverable warship \u2013 Stoikiy in a three-day operation two weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>The Navy said that patrol ship HMS Mersey based in Portsmouth had also recently tracked RFN Soobrazitelny as the corvette sailed westward in the Channel. <\/p>\n<p>Russian tanker Kola was also monitored heading in the same direction in a coordinated effort with the Joint Maritime Security Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Cmdr Teare said: \u2018We were proud to work alongside HMS Mersey and I would like to thank RFA Tidesurge for her logistical support during the operation.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018HMS St Albans is currently operating as part of a NATO Task Group and the regularity of Russian activity around the United Kingdom reinforces the vital importance of continuous integration with our allies and partners.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SEI_248939678-8aca.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22980679\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tCommander Matt Teare;\u00a0the captain of HMS St Albans (Picture: Royal Navy)<\/p>\n<p>The latest operation comes after Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited HMS Prince of Wales on Thursday, visiting sailors, aviators, soldiers, and marines onboard. <\/p>\n<p>HMS Prince of Wales, the UK\u2019s largest and most powerful aircraft carrier, departed Portsmouth on Tuesday for a deployment to the Indo-Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Russia\u2019s Tass news agency said the Admiral Golovko frigate had completed Mediterranean missions and sailed the English Channel.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s Northern Fleet said: \u2018The frigate completed the missions of its first long sortie to the Mediterranean Sea several days ago.
