And it\u2019s the closest new moon of the year. On the following evening, April 29, a thicker crescent moon will hang near Jupiter. They\u2019ll set a few hours after sunset. And the Eta Aquariid meteors you see are remnants of <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/astronomy-essentials\/comet-halley-parent-of-2-meteor-showers\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Halley\u2019s Comet<\/a>! The peak of this shower stretches out over several days. So you can expect elevated numbers of meteors a few days before and after the peak time. The twin stars are <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/best-castor-brightest-second-magnitude-star\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Castor<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/pollux-not-castor-is-geminis-brightest-star\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pollux<\/a>. However, in April 2025, there\u2019s a trio of bright lights in Gemini. That\u2019s because the the planet Mars is near the twin stars. The Big Dipper is an <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/astronomy-essentials\/definition-what-is-a-constellation-asterism\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asterism<\/a> \u2013 a well know pattern of stars \u2013 in the constellation of <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/constellations\/ursa-major-great-bear-big-dipper\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ursa Major<\/a> the Great Bear. It\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/favorite-star-patterns\/big-and-little-dippers-highlight-northern-sky\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> handy to locate the North Star, Polaris<\/a>. And you can use the Big Dipper to locate <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/constellations\/leo-heres-your-constellation\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leo<\/a> the Lion. Draw an imaginary line southward from the pointer stars in the Big Dipper \u2013 the two outer stars in the Dipper\u2019s bowl \u2013 to point toward Leo the Lion. The brightest star in Leo is <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/best-regulus-the-heart-of-the-lion\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Regulus<\/a>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Leo-the-Lion-1.jpg\" alt=\"Star chart: Lines and dots outlining animal-shaped Leo, with star Regulus at bottom right.\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" class=\"size-full wp-image-391396\"  \/>On May evenings, near your zenith \u2013 overhead in the sky \u2013 you\u2019ll see Leo the Lion in the sky in 2 parts. First, the stars making up a backward question mark represent Leo\u2019s head, and it\u2019s also known as <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/favorite-star-patterns\/the-sickle-backward-question-mark-pattern-in-leo\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Sickle<\/a>. And the triangle at the back represents the Lion\u2019s hindquarters. Also, the bright star <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/best-regulus-the-heart-of-the-lion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Regulus<\/a> is the period at the bottom of the backward question mark. Even a medium-sized telescope can zoom in on the some of the dozens of galaxies visible in that region of the sky. The other is Denebola, Arcturus and Spica.\" width=\"800\" height=\"453\" class=\"size-full wp-image-508577\"  \/>The <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/favorite-star-patterns\/spring-triangle-regulus-arcturus-spica\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spring Triangle<\/a> is an <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/astronomy-essentials\/definition-what-is-a-constellation-asterism\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asterism<\/a> with 3 bright stars at its corners: <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/bright-orange-arcturus-use-the-big-dipper-to-find-it\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arcturus<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/speed-on-to-spica-the-15th-brightest-star\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spica<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/best-regulus-the-heart-of-the-lion\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Regulus<\/a>. All 3 stars are in different constellations. <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/best-regulus-the-heart-of-the-lion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Regulus<\/a> is in <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/constellations\/leo-heres-your-constellation\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leo<\/a> the Lion. <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/bright-orange-arcturus-use-the-big-dipper-to-find-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arcturus<\/a> is in <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/constellations\/bootes-the-herdsman-arcturus\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bo\u00f6tes<\/a> the Herdsman. And <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/speed-on-to-spica-the-15th-brightest-star\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spica<\/a> is in <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/constellations\/virgo-heres-your-constellation\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Virgo<\/a> the Maiden. Nearby is the bright orange star, <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/brightest-stars\/aldebaran-is-taurus-bloodshot-eye\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aldebaran<\/a>, the fiery eye of <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/constellations\/taurus-heres-your-constellation\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Taurus<\/a> the Bull. Also nearby is the delicate <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/favorite-star-patterns\/pleiades-star-cluster-enjoys-worldwide-renown\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pleiades<\/a> star cluster and the looser <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/favorite-star-patterns\/v-shaped-hyades-star-cluster-easy-to-find\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hyades<\/a> star cluster. Jupiter\u2019s evening appearance is coming to an end soon, it\u2019ll be setting about 3 hours after the sun by month\u2019s end. Mars will move into <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/constellations\/cancer-heres-your-constellation\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cancer<\/a> the Crab this month and close to the <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/clusters-nebulae-galaxies\/praesepe-beehive-cluster\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Beehive<\/a> star cluster. Mars will remain visible in the evening sky through November but continue to fade the rest of the year as it recedes from Earth. However, this month Mars will continue to shine a bit brighter than the twin stars. In the first showing the first half of April, a starred dot, Venus, lies low above a line representing the horizon. In the second showing the second half of April, the starred dot is above two smaller dots, Saturn and Mercury.\" width=\"800\" height=\"453\" class=\"size-full wp-image-505018\"  \/>In the first half of April 2025, <strong>Venus<\/strong> will rise in the east about an hour before the sun. By month\u2019s end, it\u2019ll rise a few hours before sunrise. Venus will reach its greatest brilliancy in the morning sky on April 21, 2025. In the second half of April, Venus will grow brighter and will be joined by the much dimmer <strong>Mercury<\/strong> and <strong>Saturn<\/strong>. Mercury and Saturn will be challenging to spot in the morning twilight. Venus will reach its <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/astronomy-essentials\/venus-before-sunrise-greatest-elongation\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">greatest distance<\/a> from the sun on May 31-June 1, 2025. Mercury will reach its <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/astronomy-essentials\/mercury-before-sunrise-greatest-elongation-west\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">greatest elongation<\/a> from the sun at <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/astronomy-essentials\/universal-time\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">19 UTC<\/a> on April 21. However, this will be the best morning apparition of Mercury for the Southern Hemisphere, and challenging to spot from the Northern Hemisphere. Saturn is just emerging from its superior <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/astronomy-essentials\/what-is-a-conjunction\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">conjunction<\/a>, and it\u2019ll lie close to Venus on April 23. Saturn is now showing the southern face of its rings, but the planet will be challenging to spot in the morning twilight. Venus and Saturn will be closest to each other on the morning of April 29 when they are <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/astronomy-essentials\/sky-measurements-degrees-arc-minutes-arc-seconds\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">4 degrees<\/a> apart. That\u2019s 8 full moons lined up side-by-side. It shook his young concept of the universe and launched his interest in astronomy and stargazing, a fascination he still holds today. John is past president of the Astronomical League, the largest U.S. federation of astronomical societies, with over 24,000 members. He&#8217;s earned the title of Master Observer and is a regular contributor to the video series, \u201cGlobal Star Party.\u201d  He has authored the celestial observing guides \u201cExploring the Starry Realm,\u201d and \u201cCarpe Lunam,\u201d and \u201cTake Your First Steps, an Introduction to Amateur Astronomy.\u201d John also wrote for twenty years the monthly stargazing column, Roanoke Skies, for the Roanoke Times, and currently writes a bimonthly column, Skywatch, for Blue Ridge Country magazine. She&#8217;s the primary editor of our popular daily newsletter and a frequent host of EarthSky livestreams. Deborah created the EarthSky radio series in 1991 and founded EarthSky.org in 1994. Prior to that, she had worked for the University of Texas McDonald Observatory since 1976, and created and produced their Star Date radio series. She has won a galaxy of awards from the broadcasting and science communities, including having an asteroid named 3505 Byrd in her honor. In 2020, she won the Education Prize from the American Astronomical Society, the largest organization of professional astronomers in North America.
