July 13 2025: The modern Glasgow Airport Express 500 bus service travels through the city centre, passing grand historical sandstone architecture on a clear day\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tIf implemented, it could cost an estimated \u00a310.6 million each week (Picture: Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Though Glasgow is the first city to trial the idea, there have been <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/08\/27\/london-free-travel-realistic-22951178\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">questions of how realistic a similar scheme in London would be. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Londoners have been bogged down by the rising cost of travel, coupled with the high prices of everything from food to\u00a0<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/08\/09\/the-system-a-breaking-point-inside-londons-housing-crisis-minister-resigns-23863019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">housing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many are spending a chunk of their wages on travel on boiling hot carriages, while brazen\u00a0<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/08\/12\/fare-dodgers-push-way-barriers-front-staff-23890247\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fare dodgers irritate paying commuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Underground, Overground, Elizabeth line and DLR\u00a0<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/02\/warning-londoners-tfl-fare-increase-comes-effect-today-22652653\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fares went up by 4.6%<\/a>\u00a0along with National <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/rail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rail<\/a> tickets, which was above the rate of inflation.<\/p>\n<p>Campaigners from Free Fare <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/london\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a> have renewed calls for universal free travel for everyone, including in London, to cut inequality and pollution, and to follow in the footsteps of other smaller European cities and countries.<\/p>\n<p>Introducing universal free travel would help reduce inequality, car use and pollution, and social isolation, Fare Free London says.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"485\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SEI_272991572-945a.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-24610817\" alt=\"People waiting at underground station platform, Glasgow, Scotland UK\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tSome have been campaigning for free transport in London as well (Picture: Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Spokesperson Simon Pirani previously told <strong>Metro: <\/strong>\u2018The Underground network is the best publicly owned network in the country, but it is extremely expensive. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We now have the funding settlement between the mayor and the government, which agrees on a fare increase above inflation for four years. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018The situation for low-income families is unsustainable.
