He served as President<br \/>\nGerald Ford\u2019s White House chief of staff in the 1970s and an influential member<br \/>\nof Congress from Wyoming during the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It was his<br \/>\ntwo roles in the spotlight, however \u2013 as the architect of the Gulf War as<br \/>\nGeorge HW Bush\u2019s secretary of defence and as George W Bush\u2019s vice-president 10<br \/>\nyears later  \u2013 that cemented his place in history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">During the<br \/>\nyounger Bush\u2019s administration, he singlehandedly turned his role as<br \/>\nvice-president from what was traditionally an empty role, with little formal<br \/>\npower, into a de facto deputy presidency, overseeing American foreign policy and<br \/>\nnational security in the wake of the 11 September attacks on the World Trade<br \/>\nCenter and Pentagon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">His<br \/>\nunflinching, unapologetic willingness to wield power made him a villain for<br \/>\nmuch of the left and a hero on the right \u2013 at least for a time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The<br \/>\ndifficulty and unpopularity of the Iraq War, however, led to a falling out<br \/>\nbetween him and Bush \u2013 and, years later, a renunciation of his brand of<br \/>\ninternationalist policies by the next Republican president, Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In his<br \/>\nfinal years, Cheney would become a persona non grata in his own party, which<br \/>\nhad been reshaped in Trump\u2019s image. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">His daughter, who had followed him into<br \/>\nCongress, was ousted from office for her criticism of Trump.
