Richard Ashcroft<\/a> has spoken out about the fan who went viral at an Oasis<\/a> gig for Shazamming The Verve<\/a>\u2018s \u2018Bittersweet Symphony\u2019.<\/p>\n

The moment took place in July as Ashcroft took to the stage as the opener for one of Oasis\u2019 huge \u2018Live \u201825\u2019 comeback tour dates in Cardiff<\/a>. During the set, the former Verve frontman broke out a handful of songs from his solo discography, as well as some classics from his former band.<\/p>\n

One person in the crowd at the Principality Stadium was seemingly unfamiliar with his biggest hit though, and pulled out Shazam when he launched into \u2018Bittersweet Symphony\u2019.<\/a> The app is used to identify the name of the song and the artist by analysing a short sample of audio.<\/p>\n

Footage of the person trying to identify the track soon went viral, launching to some criticising them online, and Ashcroft himself even joking at a later gig that it was time to \u201cget your Shazams out\u201d when he went to play the 1997 hit.<\/p>\n

Now, he has spoken about the viral moment in a new interview and said that he was thrilled to see someone discovering his music.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI see that as a beautiful thing. That\u2019s a brand new fan, joining the team,\u201d he told The Guardian<\/a> when asked about the clip.<\/p>\n

\u201cBe proud! Why should everyone know everything? They may have only heard that song before England play football on ITV,\u201d he continued. \u201cIf someone doesn\u2019t recognise a famous painting, so what? We can\u2019t be cultural snobs. I\u2019d love to get her on stage with her phone when I\u2019m doing \u2018Bitter Sweet\u2019. That would be really funny.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ashcroft also went on to discuss how people would make quips at him when they saw him out and about, saying \u201cthe \u2018Bitter Sweet Symphony\u2019 video\u2019s over, mate\u201d \u2013 referencing the iconic music video that shows him walking down the street.<\/p>\n

\u201cBack in the day, I\u2019d walk around in literally the same jacket, T-shirt, corduroys and Wallabees [as in the video]. It doesn\u2019t happen so much now, thank God. I\u2019m supposed to get retribution outside this pub, but we edited that out because it looked ridiculous,\u201d he shared.<\/p>\n

The singer shared his defence of the fan who Shazammed his hit song previously too, posting the clip on social media and saying: \u201cIf you don\u2019t know it, Shazam it. All new fans welcome!\u201d<\/p>\n

Having wrapped up his support slots with Oasis now, Ashcroft has said that the huge tour was a \u201creal catalyst\u201d for young fans<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He is due to play a run of solo headline arena dates early next year <\/a>\u2013 in support of his new album \u2018Lovin You\u2019<\/a> \u2013\u00a0following a concert at Manchester\u2019s Co-op Live this month<\/a>. Due to high demand, Ashcroft went on to add a handful of new shows <\/a>to the tour last summer, which now includes stops in Glasgow, Birmingham, and Newcastle.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Last week, it was confirmed that The Verve\u2018s classic hit is being released on 7 inch vinyl for the first time ever<\/a>, after seeing a resurgence on the \u2018Live \u201825\u2019 tour.<\/p>\n
