Protesters dramatically brought a Birmingham City Council meeting to a halt as bins strike tensions continue to drag on.<\/p>\n

The council\u2019s<\/a> full meeting had to be adjourned on Tuesday afternoon, November 4, following an interruption from the public gallery.<\/p>\n

Banners urging the council to return to the bins strike negotiations were unfurled from the gallery while the sound of whistles filled the room.<\/p>\n

The industrial action<\/a> has dragged on for several months and was triggered by a dispute between the Labour<\/a>-run council and Unite the union.<\/p>\n

The meeting was promptly halted, with the Lord Mayor leaving the council chamber as security attempted to control the situation.<\/p>\n

The dramatic scenes took place as members of Unite protested outside the council house in support of the bin workers.<\/p>\n

Before the meeting was adjourned, chanting and alarms from the demonstration could be heard inside as councillors paid tribute to former colleagues who had recently died.<\/p>\n

This is not the first time that council meetings have been disrupted due to tensions over the bins strike.<\/p>\n

Back in June, council leader John Cotton was answering a question about the industrial action from a resident when another man began angrily questioning the councillor from the public gallery.<\/p>\n

\u201cWould you take an \u00a38,000 pay cut Cotton?\u201d the man shouted. \u201cWould you? Come on?<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what you\u2019re expecting hard working bin workers to take.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a similarly dramatic moment the month before when a prestigious ceremony to mark the election of Birmingham<\/a>\u2019s new Lord Mayor was interrupted by protesters.<\/p>\n

Mayor Zafar Iqbal, who serves as a councillor for the Tyseley and Hay Mills ward, took up the politically-neutral role at the lively meeting on May 20.<\/p>\n

But the grand ceremony on that day was overshadowed at moments when those supporting striking bin workers began to shout from the public gallery, with one claiming that they faced losing \u2018their livelihoods and homes\u2019.<\/p>\n

The industrial action was sparked by the loss of the Waste Recycling and Collection Officer (WRCO) role, with striking workers raising concerns about pay.<\/p>\n

The Labour-run council\u2019s leadership has repeatedly insisted a \u201cfair and reasonable\u201d offer had been made and have disputed the \u00a38,000 figure.<\/p>\n

The local authority confirmed in the summer that it was ending talks with Unite to resolve the bins crisis dispute \u2013 but there have been recent calls for negotiations to resume.<\/p>\n

Council leader John Cotton said there has been \u201cextensive attempts at negotiation under the umbrella of ACAS\u201d \u2013 the independent arbitration service.<\/p>\n
