{"id":5499,"date":"2025-04-09T09:25:13","date_gmt":"2025-04-09T09:25:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/5499\/"},"modified":"2025-04-09T09:25:13","modified_gmt":"2025-04-09T09:25:13","slug":"seven-times-black-mirror-predicted-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/5499\/","title":{"rendered":"Seven times Black Mirror predicted the future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As if the nightly news and our daily social media feeds weren\u2019t dystopian enough, this week <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/netflix?srsltid=AfmBOoro04vatdLfZv4OcFIsDGSjAbq1ORzyM9ir3OLZlLKrfWMed2Kr&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Netflix<\/a> will unleash a seventh series of Charlie Brooker\u2019s future-shock anthology series <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/black-mirror?srsltid=AfmBOorgL96219zxuhaapbOmYlDmYJ5TYQHvnc70dkyl52OwHC2g5vGc&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Mirror<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Buckle up for further tales of virtual reality gone wrong and seemingly benign technology revealed to have a demonic flip-side. In Brooker\u2019s parallel universe, anything from a vintage ZX Spectrum computer to a bang-up-to-date smartphone could contain the seeds of your destruction \u2013 or, at least, your severe embarrassment and long-term trauma.<\/p>\n<p>But while Black Mirror has a justifiable reputation for focusing on the negative aspects of tech, there is more to it than gadget-fuelled horror. \u201cI sometimes get a bit frustrated when people describe the show as being a warning about technology,\u201d <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/culture\/television\/black-mirror-charlie-brooker-san-junipero-87066?srsltid=AfmBOooXQkCIXFypxbvgi61yt6ra6-brS2z-eVZ09zimSbmfA2PsSf8O&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brooker<\/a> said in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay, we did an episode with a load of killer robot dogs \u2013 maybe that wasn\u2019t focusing on the upside of technology. But generally, in the stories, it\u2019s a weak human who messes things up rather than that there\u2019s an inherently evil device being used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, there is no question that Black Mirror has had crystal ball-like powers since its very first episode on <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/channel-4?srsltid=AfmBOoruMnRSyy7HrgOBAIpXPAP49bmrp75Dr8T59uwsOYRqt7NNxx_T&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Channel 4<\/a> in 2011. It has predicted the future in all sorts of ways \u2013 and not only in terms of terrifying tech.<\/p>\n<p>Here are seven times Black Mirror gave us a sneak peek of things to come:<\/p>\n<p>Social credit<\/p>\n<p>Nosedive, series three<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SEI_246746525.jpg\" alt=\"Black Mirror\" class=\"wp-image-3629402\"  \/>Bryce Dallas Howard as Lacie (Photo: David Dettmann\/Netflix)<\/p>\n<p>In the 2016 series opener, <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/essentials\/bryce-dallas-howard-became-hollywoods-new-feminist-role-model-16707?srsltid=AfmBOopYphGRQEQ35P90Lol-QJXnwD5evEAZTuSbeClx6BZHearXPtQR&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bryce Dallas Howard<\/a>\u2019s Lacie sees her world fall apart after a series of unfortunate events send her social rating status plummeting. In this vision of the near future, everyone has eye implants through which they can rate their social interactions with other individuals \u2013 and when Lacie\u2019s \u201cscore\u201d falls below one, she ends up in prison.<\/p>\n<p>A real-world equivalent of that system has been rolled out across China, where more than seven million people have received a tick next to their name for misdemeanours such as tax evasion. Blacklisted individuals can be deprived of the right to purchase plane or train tickets. It is worth noting, however, that this system hasn\u2019t been rolled out nationwide and is instead operated on an individual basis by local administrations.<\/p>\n<p>PM meets pig<\/p>\n<p>The National Anthem, series one<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/AD_76078405.jpg\" alt=\"Television programmes: Black Mirror: National Anthem. The man in uniform, the woman far left and the man next to her standing are all extras.\" class=\"wp-image-3629415\"  \/>Donald Sumpter as Julian Hereford, Rory Kinnear as Michael Callow, Lindsay Duncan as Alex Cairnes and Tom Goodman-Hill as Tom Bilce (Photo: Ed Miller\/Channel 4)<\/p>\n<p>In the very first episode of Black Mirror, kidnappers threaten to kill a member of the British royal family unless the Prime Minister (<a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/culture\/film\/jessie-buckley-and-rory-kinnear-men-will-probably-be-the-creepiest-film-we-ever-do-1665804?srsltid=AfmBOopKrDggAJDvMPDRRFC4ONEumQ8d6d_zV2FXvV36USTLdFvpqPES&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rory Kinnear<\/a>) does something rude with a pig on national TV.<\/p>\n<p>This was seen merely as an example of Brooker\u2019s dark and twisted imagination at the time. But in 2015 came \u201cpiggate\u201d, in which an unauthorised biography of then-PM <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/david-cameron?srsltid=AfmBOor__3PT_25DCh4r9g-XO7haXOhAlfTKwEVJ9Y4GplchLwL6DxNR&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">David Cameron<\/a> claimed that, as a student, the future leader of the United Kingdom had placed a \u201cprivate part of his anatomy\u201d into a dead pig\u2019s head as part of a university initiation rite.<\/p>\n<p>Brooker was as shocked as anyone, saying the parallels between his story and the allegations in <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/piggate-book-call-dave-bought-twice-house-commons-library-mps-show-demand-39794?srsltid=AfmBOor3GZZ9PIyr4OWoFVAv4CB-4HbabWLwyy0-L7T4U9IT-wn-BvaU&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Call Me Dave<\/a> were \u201ca complete coincidence, albeit a quite bizarre one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cycling as a currency <\/p>\n<p>Fifteen Million Merits, series one<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/AD_75628916.jpg\" alt=\"Television programmes: Black Mirror: 15 Million Merits. l-r: Bing (Daniel Kaluuya) and Abi (Jessica Brown)\" class=\"wp-image-3629412\"  \/>Daniel Kaluuya as Bing and Jessica Brown as Abi (Photo: Giles Keytes\/Channel 4)<\/p>\n<p>In this series one episode, people ride stationary bikes to gain a currency called \u201cmerits\u201d. Flash forward to 2025, and commuters at Paris\u2019s Gare Du Nord have the option to charge their phones by riding stationary bikes.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/culture\/music\/coldplay-croke-park-review-stadium-rock-perfection-3252510?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coldplay<\/a> has rolled out similar technology at their concerts, where fans can help generate energy to power the performance via \u201cenergy-storing stationary bikes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Communicate with loved ones from beyond the grave <\/p>\n<p>Be Right Back, series two<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"798\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/JAN_15669833.jpg\" alt=\"Hayley Atwell in Black Mirror picture publicity Channel 4\" class=\"wp-image-3629418\"  \/>Hayley Atwell as Martha Powell (Photo: Channel 4)<\/p>\n<p>Be Right Back \u2013 one of Black Mirror\u2019s creepiest episodes \u2013 is about a woman who resurrects her dead boyfriend via a robot that reproduces his personality based on social media posts and online communications.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, Amazon announced an experimental feature on its Alexa speakers that would allow the AI assistant to mimic the voices of users\u2019 dead relatives. The company said that adding \u201chuman attributes\u201d to its AI systems was increasingly important \u201cin these times of the ongoing pandemic\u201d. It noted, \u201cWhile AI can\u2019t eliminate that pain of loss, it can definitely make their memories last.\u201d How utterly terrifying. <\/p>\n<p>A joke politician takes over the world<\/p>\n<p>The Waldo Moment, series two<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"798\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/AY_103782929.jpg\" alt=\"Television Programme: Black Mirror. Or so we thought.<\/p>\n<p>Within just a few years, comparisons were being drawn between Waldo and another gibberish-emitting figure, <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/donald-trump?srsltid=AfmBOoqXQFfi9YlgmOW9Wc5LtRRE2bnzZSjM2pGpd0rhhK-zpbQ-7NfU&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a> (though Brooker would reveal that future British Prime Minister Boris Johnson partly inspired the clownish caricature).<\/p>\n<p>Deep fakes of real actors<\/p>\n<p>Joan Is Awful, series six<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SEI_246746829.jpg\" alt=\"Black Mirror. Nick Wall\/Netflix ?? 2023.\" class=\"wp-image-3629406\"  \/>Annie Murphy as Joan (Photo: Nick Wall\/Netflix)<\/p>\n<p>Schitt\u2019s Creek\u2018s Annie Murphy plays the eponymous Joan, a woman who is horrified to discover that Streamberry (Black Mirror\u2019s version of Netflix) has been <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/culture\/television\/black-mirror-joan-awful-netflix-review-shock-2412161?srsltid=AfmBOoq00beuq-qJqn7htRHZNhJ1CwT8J5DhIJeuuQdwxMhZ-vt5KMS3&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">using her AI likeness in its TV shows<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The episode foreshadowed that year\u2019s <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/world\/actors-union-sag-agrees-deal-to-end-longest-strike-in-hollywood-history-2742172?srsltid=AfmBOorkMYKyl1tf_70_ksQWYN-T8O2BiXZRBRvQDvHBvg3BBkwPFLJD&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hollywood actor\u2019s strike<\/a>, which was partly sparked by fears of studios using actors\u2019 images without their permission. However, as with the Prime Minister and the pig, Brooker says any link between Joan is Awful, and the AI controversy that contributed to the Hollywood work stoppage was purely coincidental.<\/p>\n<p>Robot bees<\/p>\n<p>Hated in the Nation, series three<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SEI_246747114.jpg\" alt=\"Black Mirror S1 EP5-6\" class=\"wp-image-3629401\"  \/>Faye Marsay as  Blue Coulson, Jonas Karlsson as Rasmus Sjoberg, Esther Hall as Vanessa Dahl and Kelly Macdonald as Karin Parke (Photo: Laurie Sparham\/Netflix)<\/p>\n<p>The twist at the end of this thriller is that the hidden villain whose crimes we\u2019ve been tracking is (spoiler alert) a swarm of artificial bees.<\/p>\n<p>In the real world, there is little imminent danger of robot bees bumping you off when you least suspect. However, researchers at the Massachusetts Institution of Technology have created tiny flying robots that mimic insects capable of pollinating flowers.
