Supply of those chips has been snarled since a dispute between Amsterdam and Beijing over technology transfers.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>After positive signals in talks\u00a0over the weekend, the Chinese commerce ministry issued a strongly worded statement on Tuesday telling the Netherlands to \u201cstop interfering\u201d in Nexperia\u2019s internal affairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Dutch side persists in its unilateral course without taking concrete actions to resolve the issue, which will inevitably deepen the adverse impact on the global semiconductor supply chain,\u201d the\u00a0ministry\u00a0said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Auto sector has \u2018zero autonomy\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Beijing\u2019s\u00a0statement contradicts messages from\u00a0the Hague,\u00a0Brussels\u00a0and Nexperia that they have been making progress towards\u00a0a solution,\u00a0and will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2025\/10\/24\/bosch-warns-production-at-risk-as-nexperia-dispute-hits-auto-suppliers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">worrying for carmakers<\/a> that have been scrambling for supplies of Nexperia\u2019s chips.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/10\/14\/why-has-dutch-government-taken-control-of-china-owned-chipmaker-nexperia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dutch government took control of Nexperia<\/a> on September 30, saying its Chinese owner Wingtech was planning to move the company\u2019s European production to China and that this would pose a threat to European economic security.<\/p>\n<p>China responded by cutting off exports of the company\u2019s finished chips, which are mostly packaged in China. It said this weekend it would begin accepting applications for exemptions,\u00a0following a meeting\u00a0between United States President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, which invoked a Cold War-era law to intervene at Nexperia, told Reuters that talks between both governments were still under way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe remain in contact with the Chinese authorities and our international partners to work toward a constructive solution that is good for Nexperia and our economies,\u201d the spokesperson said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>European\u00a0carmakers and\u00a0suppliers\u00a0have\u00a0rushed to apply to China for Nexperia chip export exemptions, which need to be paid for in Chinese currency, or have sought\u00a0alternative suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>The CEO of\u00a0Jeep and Fiat maker\u00a0Stellantis told the Reuters news agency on Tuesday that Europe\u2019s supply chain vulnerabilities were putting it at a competitive disadvantage versus its rivals in China.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u00a0our system means we have zero\u00a0autonomy\u00a0as an\u00a0industry,\u201d Antonio Filosa said at a sector meeting in Paris. \u201cLook at the Nexperia chip crisis. Look at the April <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2025\/6\/12\/why-chinas-rare-earth-exports-are-a-key-issue-in-trade-tensions-with-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rare earth crisis<\/a> that we went through\u00a0very painfully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018De-escalate as soon as possible\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission said it welcomed industry indications that China had engaged with EU companies to restore a partial flow of chips, preventing a worst-case scenario and creating time and space to find a lasting solution.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Nexperia, which has warned customers it cannot guarantee the quality of shipments from its Chinese site, said the company was focused on restoring supplies for customers and was seeking to \u201cde-escalate as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ola Kaellenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz, told Reuters in Paris that there were signs that an understanding was closer to being reached between China, Europe and the US, which had put Wingtech on an entity list late last year.<\/p>\n<p>The German carmaker has sufficient chips for now, Kaellenius said, adding, \u201cWe will see what the American-Chinese agreement leads to. We are watching that carefully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Wingtech was not available for comment.
