Residents on one of London\u2019s largest housing estates have overwhelmingly backed \u00a3100m regeneration plans.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A ballot<\/a> held by Wandsworth Council resulted in 82% of more than 1,400 residents supporting proposals for the Alton Estate.<\/p>\n

The proposals aim to demolish 177 homes and build up to 650 new ones, with 57% classed as affordable housing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fleur Anderson<\/a>, MP for Putney<\/a>, said: \u201cThis is fantastic news for our community.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlton residents have waited far too long for the investment they deserve, and I am delighted that they have now had their say and backed these plans so strongly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOver recent weeks I have been out on the Alton, knocking on doors, talking to residents and supporting the campaign for a \u2018YES\u2019 vote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m especially proud of our dedicated youth spaces \u2014 they\u2019ll serve young residents well.\u201d<\/p>\n

The plans also include new community facilities, a public square, GP surgeries, outdoor spaces and shops.<\/p>\n

Regeneration plans for the estate have been ongoing since 2012, but had struggled to gain political consensus.<\/p>\n

Labour took control of Wandsworth Council<\/a> in 2022 and scrapped the previous Conservative-approved scheme over affordability concerns.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The party then drew up a new regeneration plan in consultation with residents.<\/p>\n

Aydin Dikerdem, the council\u2019s cabinet member for housing, told SW Londoner: \u201cThe previous scheme would have had less council homes than when it started, which was unacceptable.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow there will not only be more council homes for Alton residents who are overcrowded or on the waiting list but also a new family hub, relocated nursery, and GP surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n

But, despite the record turnout, some residents remain uncertain.<\/p>\n

Gulled Muhamud, 38, said: \u201cI didn\u2019t vote at all.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t trust that these changes will ever happen or really serve the residents.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a strong community \u2014 a lot of people have lived here their entire lives so I hope this actually does improve the lives of residents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Built in the 1950s, the Alton Estate is considered a landmark of brutalist architecture<\/a>, with its Le Corbusier-inspired design once celebrated as a post-war achievement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, decades of underinvestment have taken their toll.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Barbara Bagalo, 67, has lived in the Alton Estate for over 40 years.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cI voted in favour of the regeneration plans and I hope they actually go ahead.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe desperately need investment here.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis used to be a lovely estate, but standards have slipped massively \u2014 I feel embarrassed to bring friends here.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should feel proud of where you live, not embarrassed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wandsworth Council will carry out the development in phases over approximately 10 years.<\/p>\n
