Now, UK scientists are about to do just that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The government is set to give the green light for experts to figure out whether the big yellow ball in the sky can be dialled down a few notches in an effort to tackle <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/scottish-news\/revised-clean-heating-plan-still-35017424\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"global warming Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">global warming <\/a>and all its potentially disastrous consequences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Within weeks, big wigs could give the go-ahead for experiments and analyses costing \u00a350 million to see if the s<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/scotland-now\/scotlands-six-best-stargazing-spots-35097843\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"unLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">un<\/a> can be dimmed down. However, the practices could result in a potentially catastrophic fallout of its own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The methods could involve spraying aerosolised particles high into the stratosphere to deflect a small fraction of the sun&#8217;s energy away from the Earth, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lbc.co.uk\/tech\/experiments-to-dim-the-sun-set-to-be-approved-within-weeks\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"according to LBCLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">according to LBC<\/a>. This may cool the planet quite cheaply, studies suggest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Another method is brightening clouds to reflect sunshine. The experiment, in total, has been given \u00a3800 million of taxpayers\u2019 money to use over the next four years, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/scientists-experiments-block-sun-b2739518.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"reports The IndependentLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">reports The Independent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Professor Symes said the project would not use toxic substances and that an environmental impact assessment would be published before any outdoor experiments and that communities in the area would be consulted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Geo-engineering could reduce the drive to stop burning fossil fuels, the root cause of climate change, some scientists say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Professor Symes said: &#8220;We will be announcing who we have given funding to in a few weeks and when we do so, we will be making clear when any outdoor experiments might be taking place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;One of the missing pieces in this <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/scottish-news\/union-warns-axing-energy-jobs-35125817\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"debate Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">debate <\/a>was physical data from the real world.
