If you live, work, rest or play in Chorlton<\/a>, you know what\u2019s missing from this liberal heart of Manchester. It has the independent bars, restaurants, delis and stores. Yet, there is no cinema.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Well, that\u2019s about to change. The Edge Theatre<\/a> is diversifying, so they now have a big screen popcorn experience waiting for you.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Edge Chorlton gets a cinema <\/p>\n

We caught up with Janine Walters, the CEO and Artistic Director of the Edge to find out more about this exciting new addition to Chorlton\u2019s creative arts scene.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Chorlton needs a cinema! <\/p>\n

Janine said: \u201cChorlton has been home to several much-loved cinemas over the years and we\u2019ve often heard people say how much they miss having a cinema nearby.\u201d They longed for somewhere they could walk to, without coming into town.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Edge always strives to reflect the wishes and interests of our audiences\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Janine added: \u201cThe Edge has always been a cultural hub for the community, a place where people come together to watch or take part in culture. So introducing a cinema felt like a natural next step.\u201d<\/p>\n

And the effect of this will add something to the community and the Edge, as it will help them to diversify, and locals can get their much-needed film fix.<\/p>\n

Janine adds: \u201cThe last Chorlton cinema closed its doors in 1962, and in recent years there\u2019s been a campaign to open up another one.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Edge always strives to reflect the wishes and interests of our audiences, and we\u2019re always looking for ways of attracting people who haven\u2019t been before.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s headed to Chorlton\u2019s new big screen?<\/p>\n

She looks genuinely excited and said: \u201cThere are so many! But\u00a0JoJo Rabbit\u00a0and\u00a0Cinema Paradiso\u00a0are definitely at the top of my list; they\u2019re both in my top five films of all time. <\/p>\n

\u201cEven though I\u2019ve seen them countless times, I can\u2019t wait to experience them on the big screen with an audience. There\u2019s something magical about watching a film communally.\u201d<\/p>\n

They say variety is the spice of life. And the line really does appeal to people of all ages. Janine adds: \u201cI\u2019m also excited about the idea of mixing classics, new releases, family favourites and NT Encore screenings, so there\u2019s really going to be something for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still the same Edge Theatre, but better! <\/p>\n

And if you love the Edge for it\u2019s theatre,<\/a> spoken word and comedy, no need to worry, everything you love about the place remains.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Janine echoes this and said: \u201cLive theatre will always be at the heart of what we do, it\u2019s who we are.\u201d<\/p>\n

But running a live venue means there are times when it\u2019s hard to find shows every weekend. She continued, \u201cHaving a cinema gives us the flexibility to keep our doors open, to keep offering high-quality entertainment and to attract new audiences who might not have discovered us otherwise. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe see it as another way to entertain and to share brilliant stories.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the vibe like?<\/p>\n

Janine waxes lyrical and said: \u201cWe\u2019re best known for being welcoming, friendly and inclusive.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether you\u2019re here for a play, a comedy night, a class, a coffee or now a film screening, you\u2019ll always be greeted with warmth and a smile. We\u2019re proud to be a space that celebrates creativity and community, and our programme has something for everyone, from family events to thought-provoking drama to great films.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
