The international trade expert has blasted politicians who put the blame on <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/politics\/2121865\/rachel-reeves-branded-total-fraud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brexit<\/a> instead of decades of poor decision-making.<\/p>\n<p>He argues the UK has the chance to boost GDP per capita by nearly 8% if it diverges from the EU rule book and embraces \u201cpro-competitive regulations\u201d. But he warns that <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/politics\/2124560\/keir-starmer-pushed-put-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closer alignment<\/a> with <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/politics\/2120123\/veteran-brexiteer-warns-keir-starmer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the EU<\/a> result could see GDP per capita fall by almost 4%.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Singham, the chairman of the Growth Commission \u2013 whose international advisory board includes former UK prime minister Liz Truss and ex-Australian PM Tony Abbott \u2013 said: \u201cPoliticians blaming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/brexit\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|AutoLink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brexit<\/a> for the UK\u2019s economic woes ahead of the Budget need to take a long hard look in the mirror. There are long-standing reasons for the economic stagnation from which the UK is suffering going back several decades, long before Brexit appeared on the agenda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSticking to costly energy policies, failing to address burgeoning welfare bills that have resulted in a bloated state and the failure so far to address planning reform with any seriousness are just some of the far more pertinent reasons for the flat-lining economy than the decision to leave the EU.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Singham, who was considered a key intellectual influence on pro-Brexit MPs, acknowledges that leaving the EU has resulted in \u201csome additional trade friction between the UK and the EU post-Brexit\u201d but he argues the \u201ccost of that can be eradicated numerous times over by taking advantage of the freedom to make the UK\u2019s regulatory system more pro-competitive than the EU\u2019s and enjoying the economic dividends that will flow as a result\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Chancellor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/rachel-reeves\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|AutoLink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rachel Reeves<\/a> claimed last month the &#8220;UK&#8217;s productivity challenge has been compounded by the way in which the UK left the European Union&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Singham turned his guns on the Britain\u2019s \u201cpolitical class\u201d for a lack of imagination when it came to came to reforming regulations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMinisters across government should urgently be reviewing the UK\u2019s regulatory framework and identifying the distortions which can be removed from the statute book to make Britain\u2019s economy far more dynamic and a better place to do business,\u201d he said. \u201cIf the Prime Minister is serious about growth being his Government\u2019s \u2018number one priority\u2019, then diverging from burdensome EU rules and regulations and embracing pro-competitive regulation offers a toll-free route to boosting UK plc.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Government ought to hunker down and get on with this as a matter of urgency.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Brexit guru Shanker Singham has warned that Britain\u2019s economic stagnation should not be blamed on the historic decision&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":552326,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5226],"tags":[802,5322,748,1700,2000,35713,299,5187,1699,4884,176825,16,17622,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-552325","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-brexit","8":"tag-brexit","9":"tag-brexit-news","10":"tag-britain","11":"tag-economy","12":"tag-eu","13":"tag-eu-regulations","14":"tag-europe","15":"tag-european","16":"tag-european-union","17":"tag-great-britain","18":"tag-shanker-singham","19":"tag-uk","20":"tag-uk-economic-growth","21":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115501321685832733","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/552325","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=552325"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/552325\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/552326"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=552325"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=552325"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=552325"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
