A report by Radhika Rao, Executive Director and Senior Economist at DBS Bank, paints a bright picture of an economy on the cusp of a historic leap, projected to surpass $10 trillion by 2040 and emerge as the world’s third-largest. But this ascent will not rest on momentum alone. It will be powered by four transformative forces — the 4Ds of Development, Diversification, Digitalisation and Decarbonisation — that together form the blueprint for a resilient and future-ready India, says the report titled ‘India 2025–40 Outlook: Pivotal Juncture’.

Development: Building the foundation for a $10 trillion economy
India is entering a defining growth phase that could reshape its global standing. According to Rao, the country’s economy is poised to expand at an average of 6.7% between 2025 and 2040, setting it on course to surpass $10 trillion in GDP and become the world’s third-largest economy. A bull-case trajectory could drive growth above 7%, hinging on value added trade and strong capex growth. This phase, she argues, will hinge on a robust “development” agenda focused on capital formation, human capital investment and productivity growth. With a working-age population of more than 900 million by 2040, India’s ability to harness its demographic dividend will determine the pace of its rise to upper-middle-income status.
The report underscores the need to strengthen human capital through education, health and skill development to raise employability and productivity. Public investment, particularly in infrastructure, is expected to play a catalytic role. Flagship initiatives such as Gati Shakti, the National Infrastructure Pipeline, and the National Logistics Policy are expected to drive long-term productivity gains and create employment opportunities across sectors.

Diversification: Expanding the global footprint
The second pillar of Rao’s framework, diversification, highlights India’s need to complement domestic growth with deeper global integration. While India’s economy remains largely domestic-driven, its trade and investment strategies are being recalibrated to expand manufacturing capabilities and strengthen export linkages. The government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, ongoing Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), and efforts to attract high-tech investments are all part of this push. India aims to lift exports from about 21% of GDP today to 30–32% by 2040, positioning itself as a “China+1” alternative in global value chains.

Sectors like electronics, semiconductors, renewables, and auto components are expected to lead the charge. States such as Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Karnataka have emerged as manufacturing hubs, drawing foreign direct investments and fostering industrial ecosystems.

Live Events
The report also notes the strategic importance of the GIFT City (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City), envisioned as India’s first international financial and technology hub, offering tax incentives and a globally competitive business environment. With banking assets in GIFT City expected to exceed $100 billion in 2026, it is emerging as a symbol of India’s ambition to compete with Dubai and Singapore as a financial centre.

Digitalisation: Fueling productivity and innovation
Digital transformation forms the third “D” in Rao’s growth model, underpinning productivity gains, financial inclusion and governance efficiency. India’s digital stack, spanning Aadhaar, UPI, and DigiLocker, has already revolutionised payments and service delivery. The next wave, according to the report, will be driven by artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and automation. Rao cautions that the rapid rise of AI requires a balance between technological adoption and regulation. Managing AI’s growth responsibly while ensuring data security and employment transitions will be crucial.India’s expanding network of Global Capability Centres (GCCs), which now account for nearly 45% of all such centres worldwide, is a case in point. These centres have evolved from back-office operations to hubs of research, innovation, and advanced analytics, generating an estimated $65 billion in annual revenue and employing almost two million professionals. By 2030, GCC revenues are projected to touch $100 billion, underscoring the growing sophistication of India’s digital economy.

Decarbonisation: The green imperative
The final pillar, decarbonisation, recognises that India’s long-term prosperity depends on how effectively it manages its climate transition. As the world’s third-largest energy consumer and greenhouse gas emitter, India faces the dual challenge of sustaining growth while cutting emissions. The country aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070, with an interim target of 50% renewable power capacity by 2030. Renewable energy already accounts for over 45% of installed power capacity, and efforts are underway to boost green hydrogen, carbon capture, and circular economy initiatives.

Rao stresses that India’s transition must be inclusive—protecting communities dependent on fossil-fuel sectors through reskilling, entrepreneurship, and social safeguards. The report also calls for strengthening supply chains for critical minerals such as lithium and cobalt, vital for renewable technologies and electric mobility. The rise of data centres and AI-driven industries further adds urgency to the clean energy agenda. As these energy-intensive sectors expand, India’s ability to power them sustainably will test its commitment to a climate-resilient growth path.

A vision for Viksit Bharat
The DBS report paints a picture of India at an inflection point. Anchored on the 4Ds of Development, Diversification, Digitalisation and Decarbonisation, India’s transformation towards Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047 will depend on how effectively it balances rapid growth with inclusion, innovation, and sustainability. Rao concludes that the decade ahead offers India a strategic opportunity for an economic renaissance, one that could redefine its role in the global order, provided policy choices remain bold, forward-looking, and grounded in the 4D framework.

As Indian economy powers ahead, a quiet but powerful transformation is taking shape.
