World\u2019s largest collider project may be dropped"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The quest to understand the \u201cGod particle\u201d may have just hit a wall in China.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">An ambitious multibillion-dollar plan to build the world\u2019s largest particle collider \u2013 a machine that could have placed the country at the pinnacle of global basic research and scientific talent \u2013 may be abandoned, according to its lead scientist.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3254604\/two-sessions-2024-chinas-construction-worlds-largest-particle-collider-may-start-2027?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">Circular Electron Positron Collider<\/a> (CEPC), designed to smash electrons and their antimatter counterparts to study Higgs bosons with unprecedented precision, was not put forward for government consideration in China\u2019s next <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/business\/china-business\/article\/3331036\/chinese-stocks-investors-study-beijings-5-year-plan-hints-future-market-forces?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">five-year plan<\/a>, according to Wang Yifang, of the Institute of High Energy Physics in Beijing.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cAlthough our proposal that CEPC be included in the next five-year plan was not successful, the institute will continue this effort, which an international collaboration has developed for the past 10 years,\u201d Wang told CERN Courier, a magazine published by European particle physics lab CERN, last month.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Wang said his team planned to submit the proposal again in 2030 unless CERN\u2019s similar project \u2013 the Future Circular Collider (FCC) \u2013 received official approval before then. In that case, he said, Chinese physicists would seek to join the FCC effort and abandon the CEPC.<\/p>\n<p>Proposed in 2012, soon after the discovery of the Higgs boson, the CEPC has been the focus of fierce debate in China. Supporters, including mathematician <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/shing-tung-yau?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">Shing-Tung Yau<\/a>, have argued that the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3199043\/chinese-particle-collider-takes-scientists-one-step-closer-figuring-out-world?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">collider<\/a> would attract thousands of leading scientists from around the world and drive technological innovation far beyond particle physics.But Nobel laureate <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/chen-ning-yang?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">Chen-ning Yang<\/a> repeatedly voiced opposition, arguing that China should not rush into building such an expensive machine. Yang, who died in October, questioned whether the collider\u2019s scientific pay-off could justify its enormous cost and warned that it could become a \u201cbottomless pit\u201d for national resources.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The quest to understand the \u201cGod particle\u201d may have just hit a wall in China.
