VANDALS<\/a> struck a shopfront on Edinburgh\u2019s busy Leith Walk<\/a> in the middle of the night, covering it in green and white paint.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The vandals appear to have gained access to the rooftop \u2013 where a railway bridge used to stand<\/a> \u2013 above the Carpet Bargain Store and\u00a0Candersons\u00a0Sweet Shop on the corner of Jane Street and poured green and white paint down in an alternating pattern.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Locals said that the council were in early in the morning to clear the paint off the shopfronts and pavement, but the\u00a0paint\u00a0remains on the disused advertising hoarding above the shop as of 1pm today.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The vandalism has caused a headache for local business owners, who turned up to work\u00a0this\u00a0morning\u00a0to find\u00a0paint covering the pavement and dripping down onto their signs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One described the paint as \u201creally annoying\u201d while\u00a0another took a more comedic view,\u00a0describing it dryly as a \u201cbeautiful pattern\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Graeme\u00a0Veitch, owner of the Carpet Bargain Store on Leith Walk, pointed the finger at \u201cHibs Casuals<\/a>\u201d because of the white and green pattern and proximity to Easter Road.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Speaking today, he said: \u201cI presume vandals have poured paint over the top of the old bridge and it poured down and covered the shop and the pavement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe council\u2019s been out, cleaned it all off and this is the residue of what we\u2019ve got left.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Speculating\u00a0on who might have poured the paint, Graeme said: \u201cWhether or not\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0Hibs\u00a0casuals or just Hibs supporters,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0green and white and\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0in Leith \u2013 so I presume\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The paint fell down over a disused advertising hoarding on the old railway bridge above the shopfronts.<\/p>\n

Locals are mostly just puzzled as to how the vandals could have made their way up to the rooftop to pour the paint down onto the advertising\u00a0hoarding and shopfront.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The owner of\u00a0Candersons\u00a0Sweet Shop, Debbie, theorised that the vandals may have gotten access to the roof through the nearby Stead\u2019s Place housing development.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cThere used to be roof access if you round the corner at Stead\u2019s Place, but kids would get up there and throw\u00a0eggs and\u00a0stuff,\u00a0so they closed it off.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve opened it back up again for some reason.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the vandalism itself, she added: \u201cIt\u2019s just really annoying.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Alan, owner of the KVASA bakery across the road, who arrived for work in the early hours of the morning said he\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0see the vandals either.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He added:\u00a0\u201cI was coming in off a job \u2013 I usually get in around 2 or 3am\u00a0\u2013 and I saw drips coming down from the sign.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

With a grin, he added: \u201cIt\u2019s beautiful.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The owners of the vacant advertising board had\u00a0reportedly been\u00a0hoping to have advertising put in soon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As yet,\u00a0there is not concrete\u00a0indication\u00a0as to who the perpetrators may have been.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The City of Edinburgh Council has been approached for comment.<\/p>\n
