{"id":553597,"date":"2025-11-06T20:09:28","date_gmt":"2025-11-06T20:09:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/553597\/"},"modified":"2025-11-06T20:09:28","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T20:09:28","slug":"serious-housing-fraud-uncovered-at-london-council-as-dozens-of-homes-given-to-people-who-werent-eligible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/553597\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Serious housing fraud&#8217; uncovered at London council as dozens of homes &#8216;given to people who weren&#8217;t eligible&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At a glance<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A Newham Council housing officer allegedly manipulated allocation systems to give 35 homes to ineligible people; the fraud was exposed by a whistleblower, and the officer resigned immediately when confronted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The council says it is working with the police to pursue a criminal investigation and recover the 35 misallocated social homes<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The fraud emerges amid Newham\u2019s severe temporary housing shortage \u2014 the borough has over 7,500 households in temporary accommodation, costing \u00a3100 million annually \u2014 prompting new policies allowing placement of families outside Newham or even London.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/newham-council\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Newham Council;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Newham Council<\/a> staff member allegedly \u201cmanipulated\u201d its housing systems to give 35 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/homes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:homes;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">homes<\/a> to people not eligible for them, the town hall has revealed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The council says it uncovered the \u201cserious internal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/housing-fraud\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:housing fraud;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">housing fraud<\/a>\u201d thanks to a whistleblower.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It says the housing officer who is suspected of the fraud \u201cimmediately resigned\u201d after being confronted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A council spokesperson told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) that the authority is now \u201cworking with the police to pursue a criminal investigation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">However the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/metropolitan-police\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Metropolitan Police;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Metropolitan Police<\/a> said there is \u201ccurrently no active police investigation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The council spokesperson said: \u201cWe can confirm that after our fraud team was contacted by a whistle-blowing member of staff reporting apparent malpractice by a housing officer, an internal fraud investigation was launched by the council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhen the housing officer was confronted, they immediately resigned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They added: \u201cThe council is working with the police to pursue a criminal investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIn the meantime, the council is seeking to recover 35 social homes that we believe may have been inappropriately let. This is a live legal case, and we cannot comment further.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The allegation of \u201cserious internal housing fraud\u201d was revealed in a report on the council\u2019s anti-fraud work, set to be discussed by its audit and governance committee this evening (Wednesday 5th).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The report alleges the member of staff \u201cmanipulated housing allocation systems to improperly assign 35 properties intended for use as temporary accommodation to ineligible individuals\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The discovery comes as the council faces a temporary accommodation crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Temporary housing is allocated to families and vulnerable people to prevent them becoming homeless.
