Jack Lowden’s star has risen due to his performance as River Cartwright in Apple TV+<\/a>‘s excellent spy thriller Slow Horses, but there’s a chance you might not have seen some of his movie work. Now that Slow Horses has wrapped up for another season, there’s a chance to watch one of his best movies on TV tonight.<\/p>\n

The affecting historical biopic Benediction, hailed as “spectacular” by IndieWire<\/a> when it was released in 2021, sees Lowden play acclaimed poet Siegfried Sassoon, a World War I soldier who was decorated for his bravery in the war and became a vocal critic of the continuation of the war.<\/p>\n

Sassoon’s poetry was inspired by his experiences on the Western Front during the war, and the movie charts how he became one of the leading war poets of his era, as well as how he came to terms with his homosexuality.<\/p>\n

As well as being one of the best movies of Lowden’s burgeoning career, Benediction can also claim to being one of Peter Capaldi’s best movies as he stars as the older version of Siegfried Sassoon. It currently holds a strong 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> so you know it’s not just our praise that the movie has received.<\/p>\n

If you fancy seeing it for the first time or a rewatch, Benediction<\/strong> airs tonight at 11pm on BBC Two<\/strong>. We know that might be a bit late for a movie watch, even on a Friday, but don’t worry as it’ll be available to stream on BBC iPlayer after broadcast.<\/p>\n

Benediction also features The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes<\/a> star Tom Blyth<\/a> in one of his first major movie roles, alongside the likes of Simon Russell Beale, Jeremy Irvine, Ben Daniels and Gemma Jones.<\/p>\n

Next month, Lowden will be seen in political comedy-drama Ella McCay alongside Emma Mackey<\/a>, Ayo Edebiri, Albert Brooks, Woody Harrelson and Jamie Lee Curtis. <\/p>\n

The movie, which lands in cinemas on 12 December, is set in 2008 and follows a thriving young politician as she attempts to balance the highs and lows of her ever-complicated family life with her flourishing career.<\/p>\n
