Police have enforced temporary new powers in the city centre with a man left fighting for his life following an incident in the Northern Quarter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Officers were called out to Back Piccadilly at 5.44pm on Thursday evening (November 6) after a man was found seriously injured.<\/p>\n

Greater Manchester Police<\/a> says a woman in her 30s was arrested in connection with the incident.<\/p>\n

The man was taken to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition this morning (Friday).<\/p>\n

Details on the exact nature of the incident are yet to be established.<\/p>\n

Moments later, officers were called out to a second incident nearby.<\/p>\n

GMP says a male was chased by a group of ‘several’ people, who were said to be making threats.<\/p>\n

The victim took shelter in a restaurant before the offenders fled the scene.<\/p>\n

No arrests have been made in connection with the second incident.<\/p>\n

A Section 34 dispersal order and a Section 60 order, boosting police stop and search powers, are now in force until 11.40pm tonight.<\/p>\n

The orders cover the Northern Quarter and Piccadilly Gardens<\/a>, in the area shown on the map below.<\/p>\n

A cordon remains in place this morning on Back Piccadilly and Spear Street.<\/p>\n

Superintendent Nicola Williams, of GMP\u2019s City of Manchester district, said: “These orders have been put in place overnight and they give officers additional powers which will be utilised to prevent any further incidents or the carrying of weapons.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will have our dedicated Piccadilly Gardens policing neighbourhood team who are patrolling the area to provide reassurance and visibility to our communities.<\/p>\n

“If you have any concerns or any information, then please speak to those officers who will reassure and respond to any queries. These powers are crucial to preventing potential further offences or instances of violence in the community.<\/p>\n
