{"id":555154,"date":"2025-11-07T13:10:25","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T13:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/555154\/"},"modified":"2025-11-07T13:10:25","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T13:10:25","slug":"popular-south-bank-shopping-destination-gabriels-wharf-to-be-torn-down-by-developers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/555154\/","title":{"rendered":"Popular South Bank Shopping Destination Gabriel\u2019s Wharf To Be Torn Down By Developers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In London, the battle between beloved\u00a0local destinations \u2013 be them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/news\/this-iconic-south-london-shopping-centre-is-being-destroyed-to-build-1-700-new-homes-101525\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shopping centres<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/news\/east-londons-moth-club-is-threatened-by-another-new-housing-development-112124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nightclubs<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/news\/the-legendary-prince-charles-cinema-is-opening-a-second-venue-in-east-london-081125\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cinemas<\/a> \u2013 and developers never stops.\u00a0The latest popular spot to face demolition in the face of developments is \u2018hidden gem\u2019\u00a0Gabriel&#8217;s Wharf on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/things-to-do\/londons-southbank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Bank<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Home to a dozen independent businesses, Gabriel\u2019s Wharf opened to shoppers in\u00a01988. Business owners on the site have now been told that they must move out in\u00a0a year&#8217;s time as the site is going to be demolished.\u00a0Current indie businesses in the wharf include jewellery makers, clothing designers, pottery makers, art galleries and a variety of food artisans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, Gabriel Wharf is expected to close before Christmas 2026, as\u00a0Coin Street, the social enterprise responsible for redeveloping the area in the early 1980s, wants to regenerate the site into a new \u2018meanwhile use\u2019 space while they decide more permanent plans for the future. There are also plans to build a nursing home on the site within the next 10-15 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Current traders have been told they must cease\u00a0trading by September 27, 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"e7cd2858-7b4a-db9d-6671-589540471c09\" class=\"photo lazy inline\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"lazy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1762521025_650_image.webp.webp\" alt=\"Gabriel\u2019s Wharf, South Bank, London\" data-caption=\"\" data-credit=\"Photograph: Elena Rostunova \/ Shutterstock.com\" data-width-class=\"\" data-image-id=\"106340423\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\nPhotograph: Elena Rostunova \/ Shutterstock.com&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel&#8217;s Wharf Tenants Association is due to meet Coin Street and Florence Eshalomi, the MP for Vauxhall and Camberwell Green, on Thursday (November 13) to discuss the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Liz Mathews, who co-owns Potters\u2019 Yard, a pottery studio, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) that the traders asked for an extension to trade until the end of 2026 so they could have \u2018two more Christmases\u2019 but Coin Street \u2018refused\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We\u2019re feeling devastated,\u2019 she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Coin Street said many of the units at Gabriel&#8217;s Wharf were reaching the end of their life and the site had to close to allow for their temporary replacement.
