{"id":555314,"date":"2025-11-07T15:08:14","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T15:08:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/555314\/"},"modified":"2025-11-07T15:08:14","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T15:08:14","slug":"britain-removes-sanctions-on-syrias-president-eu-to-follow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/555314\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain removes sanctions on Syria&#8217;s president, EU to follow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n      Sharaa, once a senior figure in HTS and previously affiliated with al Qaeda, was sanctioned by the UN and Britain in 2014, which included a travel ban, asset freeze and arms embargo [GETTY]<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:11px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/news\/uk-lifts-syria-sanctions-24-entities-including-central-bank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Britain<\/a> removed sanctions on Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa on Friday, a day after the United Nations Security Council did the same, ahead of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/news\/us-asks-un-lift-sanctions-syrias-president-ahead-visit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meeting<\/a> with US President Donald Trump next week, with the European Union confirming it would follow suit.<\/p>\n<p>Britain stated in a notice on its government&#8217;s website that it was also lifting sanctions on Syria&#8217;s Interior Minister, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/news\/who-syrias-new-intelligence-chief-anas-khattab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anas Khattab<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Both men had formerly been subject to financial sanctions targeted at the Islamic State and al-Qaeda.<\/p>\n<p>A European Union spokesperson said on Friday the UN decision would be reflected in EU measures.<\/p>\n<p>Britain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/news\/uk-ends-sanctions-syria-defence-interior-ministries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lifted<\/a> some sanctions on Syria in April, while the bloc lifted its economic sanctions in May, but restrictions related to arms and security remain in place.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We remain committed to supporting a peaceful and inclusive Syrian-led and Syrian-owned transition to help build a better future for all Syrians,&#8221; a European Commission spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/news\/syrian-leader-sharaa-head-washington-november-us-envoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sharaa<\/a>, formerly known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani, became Syria&#8217;s president in January after insurgent forces led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/opinion\/bashar-al-assads-terror-state-gone-syria-can-breathe-again\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ousted<\/a> Bashar al-Assad in a lightning offensive.<\/p>\n<p>Sharaa, once a senior figure in HTS and previously affiliated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/news\/un-experts-warn-al-qaedas-africa-threats-risks-syria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">al-Qaeda<\/a>, was sanctioned by the UN and Britain in 2014, which included a travel ban, asset freeze and arms embargo.<\/p>\n<p>The UN Security Council <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/news\/un-security-council-votes-lift-sanctions-syrias-sharaa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lifted<\/a> those measures on Thursday, citing a lack of active ties between HTS and al-Qaeda.
