Another ’90s horror classic is getting a “modern era” reboot, with a writer and producer on board.<\/p>\n

1998’s Urban Legend starred Suicide Squad<\/a>‘s Jared Leto, Dawson’s Creek<\/a>‘s Joshua Jackson, Smallville<\/a>‘s Michael Rosenbaum and Sharknado<\/a>‘s Tara Reid.<\/p>\n

A slasher that followed in the wake of Scream’s success, the film centres on a string of murders at a university campus that are seemingly inspired by urban legends. Our main character is even a reporter, while another character is a comic relief cop.<\/p>\n

As well as its main cast of young stars, Urban Legend also features A Nightmare on Elm Street<\/a>‘s Robert Englund and The Lord of the Rings<\/a>‘ Brad Dourif also appeared in supporting roles.<\/p>\n

Despite a negative critical reception (30% on Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> from 67 critic reviews), the film earned over $70 million at the box office from a $14 million budget.<\/p>\n

The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> states that Sony’s Screen Gems label is in “early development” of a new version, with Shanrah Wakefield penning the script and the Until Dawn<\/a> movie’s Gary Dauberman producing.<\/p>\n

The publication states that the reboot will be a “modern era” reimagining that looks to examine what an urban legend looks like and how they are spread in a world of digital information and social media.<\/p>\n

Speaking of Until Dawn, the big-screen game adaptation has just been released and despite some strong early first impressions<\/a>, actual reviews painted a more mixed impression<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Jared Leto will soon be seen in the sci-fi sequel Tron: Ares<\/a>, which is out in October.<\/p>\n
