Credit: Alexander Brock.<\/p>\n<p>Amid the celebrations taking place, Conservative councillors called for a major change this week, saying it\u2019s been several years since the last council-run bonfire in Brum.<\/p>\n<p>They went on to argue that the Labour-run council reintroducing bonfire celebrations would provide a \u201csafe environment\u201d and ensure future generations of Brummies learn about the historical event.<\/p>\n<p>They added the local authority should work with sponsors to fund bonfire night.<\/p>\n<p>Conservative councillor Robert Alden, leader of the opposition, said: \u201cWe need to ensure that we don\u2019t lose over 400 years of history being celebrated here in Birmingham.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is why we are calling for the council to reintroduce a bonfire night celebration here in Birmingham, which will provide a safe environment for Brummies to enjoy a large-scale bonfire and fireworks display.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">council <\/a>could also work with schools, libraries and community centres to ensure other events and information remembering November 5 is shared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fellow Conservative councillor Ewan Mackey added that the party would work with the council to find funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe council should be looking at working with sponsors to be able to provide a cost-effective way of funding bonfire night going forward,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He continued that this would ensure that \u201cfuture generations of Brummies learn about the celebration of Bonfire Night and the history behind it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are keen to work with the council to make this happen,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Birmingham City Council <\/a>was contacted for comment about the Conservative councillors\u2019 requests.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Families will be attending events in and around the city this weekend to mark the King and Parliament&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":556715,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7820],"tags":[855,748,393,4884,8823,379,12,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-556714","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-birmingham","8":"tag-birmingham","9":"tag-britain","10":"tag-england","11":"tag-great-britain","12":"tag-ldrs","13":"tag-local-hubs","14":"tag-news","15":"tag-uk","16":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115512709842484803","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/556714","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=556714"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/556714\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/556715"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=556714"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=556714"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=556714"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
