But we\u2019re struggling&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/0_TCB061125BreakfastBRIjpeg.jpg\" alt=\"Adam Tunc, who runs the Sunshine Cafe on East Street in Bedminster\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Adam Tunc, who runs the Sunshine Cafe on East Street in Bedminster(Image: Bristol Post)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">It\u2019s been the staple breakfast of champions for the working people of Bristol for generations, but now the cost of preparing a full English breakfast and placing it in front of a customer in one of the city\u2019s many traditional cafes is becoming so high that cafe owners say they face a dilemma &#8211; either put the price up too much or stop serving them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">This week, the cost of a plate of sausage, eggs, bacon, beans and hash browns, maybe a grilled tomato and some mushrooms too, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/cost-full-english-breakfast-in-10621153\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"was debated in parliamentLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">was debated in parliament<\/a>, with MPs calling for the abolition of business rates for hospitality businesses like pubs and cafes, just to keep the traditional English breakfast out of danger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">On one of the few remaining streets in Bristol with a range of traditional cafes that still serve a full English, cafe owners confirmed that the prices of the ingredients have rocketed in recent months and years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">\u201cOh my word, tell me about it,\u201d exclaimed Adam Tunc, who has run the Sunshine Cafe in East Street, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bedminster\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bedminster<\/a> with his brother and family for almost 15 years. \u201cI don\u2019t think people realise just how much things cost for us now. Just as an example, I used to buy all the milk and bread for the toast at Aldi and we\u2019d be spending \u00a315 each time. Now the same amount is \u00a330,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">\u201cWe use free-range eggs and we buy them in huge packs of 360 eggs &#8211; we serve a lot of breakfasts &#8211; and we\u2019d be spending no more than \u00a340, and now it\u2019s \u00a372,\u201d he added, reeling off just how much all the different elements of a full English have gone through the roof recently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">\u201cI used to get the sausages for \u00a34 a pack, and the same pack now is \u00a39. Bacon\u2019s gone up, beans have gone up, everything. Our customers are all working people, or people on benefits or pensions. No one\u2019s got any extra money to spend. But whereas before we would make our money on breakfasts, now we\u2019re hardly making anything,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">\u201cWe\u2019re just still doing it because people need feeding. Proprietor Anthony Miller is quick to acknowledge the issue. \u201cIt\u2019s the baked beans!\u201d he exclaimed. \u201cThat\u2019s the thing that surprised me most. The big cans we get, they\u2019re like \u00a31.10 a can now. Everything is up now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">\u201cWe do everything with really good quality ingredients, so the sausage and the bacon is all top quality. I could do it for a lot less if I bought rubbish meat and rubbish bacon and stuff, but I reckon each plate of a full English we serve now has cost us \u00a36 or \u00a37 to put together, which is much more than it used to be,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">In the Commons this week, calls were made for the Government to abolish business rates for High Street hospitality and leisure businesses. Conservative MP Mark Pritchard said the Government \u2018<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/cost-full-english-breakfast-in-10621153\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"would not be forgiven\u2019 if the English breakfast disappearedLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">would not be forgiven\u2019 if the English breakfast disappeared<\/a> from the nation\u2019s cafes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/0_TCB061125BreakfastBRI_02jpeg.jpg\" alt=\"The breakfast menu at the East Street Deli on East Street in Bedminster\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The breakfast menu at the East Street Deli on East Street in Bedminster(Image: Bristol Post)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">\u201cCafes play an important part on the high street, bringing people in,\u201d he said. \u201cUnder this Government, mushrooms are up, bacon is up, eggs are up, sausages are up, bread is up, tea is up, milk is up, and therein is a threat to the full English breakfast. And there are many things that this Government might be forgiven for, but taking away the full English breakfast from the high street is not one of them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">Shadow business secretary Andrew Griffith echoed his fears. \u201cI enjoy a full English as much as I suspect my colleague does. And it&#8217;s not just breakfast \u2013 it&#8217;s lunch, it&#8217;s supper, it&#8217;s tea, it&#8217;s dinner, and it&#8217;s the great British pub.
