{"id":556955,"date":"2025-11-08T09:29:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T09:29:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/556955\/"},"modified":"2025-11-08T09:29:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T09:29:10","slug":"nobel-laureate-spence-on-china-fix-property-restore-confidence-tariffs-are-secondary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/556955\/","title":{"rendered":"Nobel laureate Spence on China: fix property, restore confidence \u2013 tariffs are secondary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Restoring confidence and stabilising the property market are \u201csignificantly more important\u201d for China than the ramifications of tariffs, a Nobel laureate in economics said while warning of financial risks to Chinese households.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3273900\/nobel-winning-economist-michael-spence-chinas-future-tech-driven-world?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Spence<\/a>, who won the Nobel Prize in 2001, made the remarks at the Hongqiao International Economic Forum in Shanghai on Thursday, during a panel discussion on China\u2019s pathway to revitalise consumption.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">While acknowledging that Beijing needs to \u201cseriously\u201d address tariff frictions, the 82-year-old Canadian-American said such external factors were of \u201csecondary importance with respect to restoring momentum in the Chinese economy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cStabilisation of the real estate sector, the financial sector that\u2019s related to it, [and] restoring confidence and momentum are significantly more important than whatever impacts the tariffs are having,\u201d said Spence, who is also a Philip H.
