Travel guru Simon Calder<\/a> recommended Cascais, just outside of Lisbon<\/a>, Portugal<\/a>, as one of his favourite winter locations. Cascais is an affordable destination during the winter months, with direct flights from UK airports to Lisbon, which is the closest airport, and an average temperature of 18C in November.<\/p>\n

Cascais is a very walkable town, making it perfect for pensioners\u00a0seeking a\u00a0holiday destination<\/a> that’s easy to explore\u00a0on foot. Travel writer and photographer Caroline explained on her travel blog Packthesuitcases<\/a> that Cascais \u201cis a nice walkable size, you don\u2019t need to worry about taxis and buses unless you\u2019re venturing further afield to things like Cabo da Roca – everything in the town itself is easily reached on foot\u201d.<\/p>\n

Caroline explained that Cascais is also easily reached by train from Lisbon<\/a>. \u201cThe train takes about 40 minutes from Cais do Sodr\u00e9, and it\u2019s an enjoyable journey along the coast.\u201d<\/p>\n

Simon Calder recommended Cascais on her travel podcast, where he said the beautiful town is one of his “favourite Portuguese locations\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cCascais is the port planted elegantly on the shoreline west of the capital, Lisbon, on what\u2019s known as the Portuguese Riviera. It was settled in turn by Romans, Visigoths and Moors, and today the centre of Cascais is an intriguing combination of sun-worn houses, caf\u00e9s, shops and smart hotels.\u201d<\/p>\n

The travel expert explained that there are also \u201cexcellent beaches within easy reach of Cascais\u201d.<\/p>\n

A visitor described the town as \u201ca little slice of heaven\u201d on Tripadvisor<\/a>. The traveller said: \u201cCascais is amazing, beautiful coastline, stunning, immaculate beaches and a really charming town. The people are lovely and the food is out of this world!\u201d<\/p>\n
