What do aspirin,\u00a0Dennis the Menace and Grand Theft Auto all have in common? They all originate from\u00a0a city\u00a0that fancy travel magazine Cond\u00e9 Nast Traveller (CNT) just named one of the most underrated in all of Europe \u2013 Dundee.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Normally overlooked for Edinburgh<\/a> or Glasgow<\/a>, Scotland\u2019s fourth largest city has major design credentials and\u00a0is\u00a0the UK\u2019s first and only UNESCO City of Design.\u00a0CNT\u00a0gave it a shoutout in its list of Europe\u2019s most underrated places for being\u00a0\u2018a city that genuinely surprises\u2019.<\/p>\n

In 2018,\u00a0the city became home to the V&A Dundee,\u00a0Scotland\u2019s first design museum in and the\u00a0only Victoria and Albert museum<\/a> outside of London<\/a>.\u00a0Designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma to evoke area\u2018s coastline, it has currently has exhibitions exploring Palestinian embroidery and garden design and next year will open shows on design and disability and the art of the fashion show.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dundee\u2019s\u00a0UNESCO designation also celebrates\u00a0numerous other innovations that have come from the city, including aspirin, Beano and Dandy comics, orange marmalade and video games like\u00a0Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto (yes really, it was designed by Dundee-based company DMA Design in 1997).\u00a0<\/p>\n

The RRS Discovery, a ship that carried Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton to the Antarctic in 1901,\u00a0 is another of Dundee\u2019s most acclaimed attractions, alongside the\u00a0McManus Art Gallery and Museum, a Gothic building with eight gallery spaces\u00a0of\u00a0art and artefacts spanning 400 million years of Scottish history.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not all. CNT\u00a0also recommends that visitors \u2018head up Dundee Law for views over the Tay bridges, then wander the revamped waterfront\u2019\u00a0or tie their visit into a longer Highlands<\/a> trip with a stay at the Fife Arms in Braemar in the Cairngorms.\u00a0<\/p>\n
