The planned change to the official age of retirement has been in legislation since 2014 with a further rise from 67 to 68 set to be implemented between 2044 and 2046.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">The third review of the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/state-pension-age-review-2023-government-report\/state-pension-age-review-2023\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"State Pension age reviewLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">State Pension age review<\/a> launched last month and will look at future rises, taking into account life expectancy, the labour market, costs and sustainability. Forecast expenditure on the State Pension in 2025\/26 is \u00a3146 billion, however, by 2029\/30, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) estimates this will rise to \u00a3169bn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Under the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/new-state-pension-payment-rates-35714631\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Triple Lock,Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Triple Lock,<\/a> State Pensions increase each year in-line with whichever is the highest of average annual earnings growth from May to July, Consumer price Index (CPI) inflation rate in the year to September or 2.5 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE: <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/new-state-pension-payment-delays-36206195\" data-tmdatatrack=\"read-more\" data-tmdatatrack-articleid=\"36206195\" data-tmdatatrack-source=\"editorial\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">State Pension payment delays for older people set to retire before year ends<\/a>READ MORE: <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/state-pension-age-income-tax-36195172\" data-tmdatatrack=\"read-more\" data-tmdatatrack-articleid=\"36195172\" data-tmdatatrack-source=\"editorial\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Millions of people over State Pension age to pay tax in new financial year<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">It&#8217;s important to be aware that any changes to the State Pension age must follow the principle of giving people 10 years notice any change to their retirement age &#8211; or potentially end up with another situation which has affected an estimated 3.6 million <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/waspi\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"women born in the 1950s.Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">women born in the 1950s.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thephoenixgroup.com\/phoenix-insights\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Phoenix InsightsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Phoenix Insights<\/a> has warned that around three million people would see a delay to their retirement plans if the State Pension age increase to 68 is brought forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">The latest figures from the DWP show there are now 13 million people claiming the State Pension, including over 1.1m in Scotland. Some 34 per cent are on the New State Pension (post-April 2016) while 66 per cent are receiving the Basic (or Old) State Pension (pre-April 2016).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">People on the full New State Pension receive \u00a3230.25 per week and as the payment is typically made every four weeks this amounts to \u00a3921. Annual payments will be worth \u00a311,973 over the 2025\/26 financial year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">However, not all of the 4.1m people on the New State Pension receive the full amount as it is linked to National Insurance Contributions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">People need to pay at least 10 years\u2019 worth of National Insurance Contributions (NICs) to be entitled to any State Pension and around 35 years for the full rate, which can be more if someone has been <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/contracted-out\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"\u2018contracted out\u2019.Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018contracted out\u2019.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Someone on the full Basic State Pension receives weekly payments of \u00a3176.45, or \u00a3705.80 every four-week payment period. Annual payments will be worth \u00a39,175.40 over the 2025\/26 financial year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Patrick Thomson, Head of Research Analysis and Policy at Phoenix Insights, said: \u201cThe State Pension remains at a critical juncture with questions remaining over its long-term affordability and the future of the Triple Lock. Projections suggests there will be five million more State Pensioners in the UK by 2070 compared to just one million more people of working-age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Four key findings about the State Pension<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Phoenix Insights found that:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Around a fifth (18%) of adults say they could live on the state pension alone in retirement<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">A third (35%) of the pre-State Pension age group (60-65yrs) have zero private pension saving<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">45% of adults expect to work beyond their State Pension age to plug gaps in savings<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">3 million people would see a delay in State Pension payments if the retirement age increase to 68 is brought forward to 2041-2043<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Mr Thomson continued: \u201cAccelerating the State Pension age could mitigate some of the cost challenge, but recent life expectancy projections are less optimistic making policy change potentially more difficult. Bringing forward the State Pension age increase to age 68 to the early 2040s would impact nearly three million people and not everyone will be able to work to a later State Pension age.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">\u201cWe are expecting another State Pension age review in this parliament which should offer more clarity on the timetable of the future increase to age 68.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">He added: \u201cIt\u2019s important that any future change to the State Pension is combined with policy interventions to support greater retirement adequacy, including enabling people to remain in work later in life and boosting pension saving through auto-enrolment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Future State Pension increases<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">The Labour Government has pledged to honour the Triple Lock or the duration of its term and the latest predictions show the following projected annual increases:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">2025\/26<\/strong> &#8211; 4.1% (the forecast was 4%)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">2026\/27 &#8211;<\/strong> 2.5% (currently on track for 4.8%)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">2027\/28<\/strong> &#8211; 2.5%<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">2028\/29<\/strong> &#8211; 2.5%<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">2029\/30<\/strong> &#8211;
