\n Yet, for far too long, forces families, including many with roots right here in Halesowen, have been let down.\n<\/p>\n
\n Over the past 14 years, the Conservative government failed to invest properly in military housing, and the problem goes back even further.\n<\/p>\n
\n In 1996, under John Major, the Conservatives sold off our armed forces\u2019 married quarters in one of the worst privatisation deals imaginable: selling homes to private investors, then renting them back at the taxpayers\u2019 expense.\n<\/p>\n
\n By the time Labour entered Government, these rental payments had hit \u00a3600,000 a day, with homes run down and left to rot. Private investors cashed in while families lost out.\n<\/p>\n
\n So after six months in office, we announced the landmark buy-back of 36,000 homes, bringing forces\u2019 family housing into public ownership where they belong.\n<\/p>\n
\n Today, we launch the next chapter: a Defence Housing Strategy which means the biggest renewal of military housing in over half a century. And sit will supercharge housebuilding on surplus Defence land \u2013 delivering new homes for veterans, military and civilian families.\n<\/p>\n
\n 40,000 military homes will be upgraded, including homes across Halesowen.\n<\/p>\n
\n A new Defence Housing Service will manage those homes with a \u2018forces first\u2019 approach. And we will unlock the building of over 100,000 homes on Defence land \u2013 helping deliver the homes Britain needs.\n<\/p>\n
\n The Tory scandal of unfit forces housing won\u2019t be fixed overnight, but with a record \u00a39bn investment over the next decade \u2013 benefitting service families across Halesowen, we are already getting on with that work at pace.\n<\/p>\n
\n Works are already underway across the country today on the 1,000 homes in most in need of repair.\n<\/p>\n
\n We\u2019ve already launched a Consumer Charter for forces families to drive up standards. And with today\u2019s Strategy, that work will now accelerate.\n<\/p>\n
\n All of this is happening because our Labour Government is delivering for defence and for our Armed Forces.\n<\/p>\n
\n We are increasing defence spending and using that money to back the brave service men and women who keep our nation safe.
