{"id":55922,"date":"2025-04-27T22:57:12","date_gmt":"2025-04-27T22:57:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/55922\/"},"modified":"2025-04-27T22:57:12","modified_gmt":"2025-04-27T22:57:12","slug":"scott-mctominay-becomes-napoli-history-maker-in-more-ways-than-one-as-scotland-hero-mobbed-in-emotional-scenes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/55922\/","title":{"rendered":"Scott McTominay becomes Napoli history maker in more ways than one as Scotland hero mobbed in emotional scenes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>McTominay fired Napoli a huge step closer to the Serie A title and he made history in more ways than one along the way<\/p>\n<p>21:47, 27 Apr 2025Updated 22:03, 27 Apr 2025<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/0_FBL-ITA-SERIEA-NAPOLI-TORINO.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Scott McTominay and his Napoli teammates celebrate(Image: AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Scott McTominay made it 11 <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/serie-a\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Serie A <\/a>goals for the season, the most ever by a Scottish player, as Napoli pounced on an Inter stumble to take charge of the title race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The superlatives are running out to describe the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/scotland-football-team\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Scotland<\/a> superstar since he swapped <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/manchester-united-fc\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Manchester United<\/a> for Naples in the summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Heading into Sunday night&#8217;s clash with Torino, Napoli knew that a win would be a serious boost for their Scudetto charge, with Inter losing at home to Roma earlier that day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">And there was only one man they were going to turn to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/scott-mctominay\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">McTominay<\/a> had scored three in their last two games, being named man of the match in both, and he was the star of the show once again as they cruised to a 2-0 win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He powered in both first half goals, the second putting him on 11 for the season \u2013 something even the great Denis Law didn&#8217;t manage in the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/0_Napoli-v-Torino-Serie-A.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Scott McTominay celebrates his second goal(Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He also surpassed Lewis Ferguson for the best individual goalscoring season for a Scot in Italy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The scenes that followed were emotional for Napoli who felt the title momentum swing in their favour and a fired-up McTominay was mobbed by his teammates after the goal hit the back of the net.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">There might be a tinge of crisis hiding in it for a Napoli team who lost key men Alessandro Buongiorno, Franck Zambo Anguissa and Stanislav Lobotka to injuries throughout the second half.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But for McTominay it was history in more ways than one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">According to TNT Sports, only two Brutish players in history prior to this one had scored two goals or more in a single game in Italy&#8217;s top flight \u2013 Trevor Francis with Sampdoria and John Charles with Juventus, all the way back in the early 1960s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He and teammate Billy Gilmour also become the first Scots in the modern era to lift the Serie A trophy if Napoli can safely navigate their final four games.
