The Duchess was accompanied by the Duke of Kent on the balcony, and pinned to her black dress was not one but three poppies. The Queen also wore a trio of poppies, as has Kate in previous years. It is thought that the three flowers are to represent the three main branches of the military; Royal Air Force, the Royal Navy and the British Army.

<img draggable="true" alt="london, england november 09: sophie, duchess of edinburgh and prince edward, duke of kent attend the 2025 national service of remembrance at the cenotaph on november 09, 2025 in london, england. every year, members of the british royal family join politicians, veterans and members of the public to remember those who have died in combat. They were at the Royal Albert Hall for the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance, and this year’s event was particularly poignant as it marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two.

MORE FROM THE ROYAL FAMILY

The senior women of the Royal Family; Queen Camilla, The Princess of Wales and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh…

[8816
748,1380,178472,1331,178471,1102,4884,1330,712,149764,16,15
0":"post-559316","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-edinburgh","8":"tag-britain","9":"tag-content-type-news","10":"tag-contentid-599c4d3e-49e9-4307-961c-49f9bf761e79","11":"tag-displaytype-standard-article","12":"tag-duchess-of-edinburgh-sheds-a-tear-with-kate-on-remembrance-sunday","13":"tag-edinburgh","14":"tag-great-britain","15":"tag-locale-gb","16":"tag-scotland","17":"tag-shorttitle-sophie","18":"tag-uk","19":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
