{"id":559770,"date":"2025-11-09T17:16:18","date_gmt":"2025-11-09T17:16:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/559770\/"},"modified":"2025-11-09T17:16:18","modified_gmt":"2025-11-09T17:16:18","slug":"ukraine-scrambles-for-electricity-with-generation-at-zero","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/559770\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine scrambles for electricity with generation at \u2018zero\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ukraine was scrambling to turn lights and heating back on yesterday after Russian attacks targeted energy infrastructure, with the state power provider saying its generating capacity was reduced to \u201czero.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moscow, which has escalated attacks on Ukraine\u2019s infrastructure in the past few months, launched hundreds of drones at energy facilities across the country on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian strikes on Russia\u2019s own infrastructure meanwhile left more than 20,000 people without power in regions bordering Ukraine, local authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/P01-251110-323.jpg\" width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Photo: AP<\/p>\n<p>The Russian attacks interrupted electricity, heat and water supplies in several cities, with state power firm Centerenergo warning its generating capacity \u201cis down to zero.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn unprecedented number of missiles and countless drones \u2014 several per minute \u2014 targeted the same thermal power plants that we had restored after the devastating attack of 2024,\u201d Centrenergo said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Power was cut for between eight and 16 hours a day across most regions of Ukraine yesterday, state power transmission system operator Ukrenergo said, while repairs were carried out and energy sourcing diverted.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian Minister of Energy Svitlana Hrynchuk called it \u201cone of the most difficult nights\u201d since Russia sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022.<\/p>\n<p>While the situation had somewhat stabilized, regions including Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Poltava, Chernihiv and Sumy could continue to see regular power cuts, Hrynchuk said on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe enemy inflicted a massive strike with ballistic missiles, which are extremely difficult to shoot down. It is hard to recall such a number of direct strikes on energy facilities since the beginning of the invasion,\u201d she told local broadcaster United News.<\/p>\n<p>Russian drones had targeted two nuclear power substations deep in western Ukraine, Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha said, calling on the UN\u2019s nuclear watchdog to respond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussia is deliberately endangering nuclear safety in Europe.
