Smiths says it now plans to create 50 new roles in the city, with a strong focus on apprenticeships and early careers.<\/p>\n

The company, which was founded in 1851 and is headquartered in London, designs, manufactures and delivers engineering products for mission-critical applications in fields such as energy, gas and security screening.<\/p>\n

It has launched the new base at 60 Church Street in the heart of the city’s business district<\/a> and this fresh round of recruitment will be for roles in HR, procurement, pensions and legal among others.<\/p>\n

Chief executive Roland Carter said: “The opening of our Birmingham office is a natural step forward for Smiths, giving us access to world-class talent, a thriving business community and a central location with direct links to other major UK cities, including our London HQ.<\/p>\n

“We see significant opportunities for growth, talent development and regional rebalancing.”<\/p>\n

Smiths employs around 1,300 people at its head office and at manufacturing and R&D sites in Slough, Merthyr Tydfil, Hemel Hempstead, Dundee and Manchester.<\/p>\n

It was helped in its move into Birmingham by inward investment agency West Midlands Growth Company.<\/p>\n

Birmingham City Council leader Cllr John Cotton added: “Attracting high-growth, international businesses like Smiths to Birmingham and the wider West Midlands is exactly what last month’s Regional Investment Summit was all about.<\/p>\n

“Its decision to place our city at the centre of its UK growth strategy is testament to Birmingham’s unbeatable connectivity, world-class STEM talent and collaborative business ecosystem.<\/p>\n
