{"id":561435,"date":"2025-11-10T13:12:20","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T13:12:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/561435\/"},"modified":"2025-11-10T13:12:20","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T13:12:20","slug":"demountable-timber-structure-reinvigorates-palais-rameau-in-lille","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/561435\/","title":{"rendered":"Demountable timber structure reinvigorates Palais Rameau in Lille"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>French architecture studios <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/atelier-981\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Atelier 9.81<\/a> and Perrot &amp; Richard have renovated the Palais Rameau exhibition hall in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/lille\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lille<\/a>, inserting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/modular\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">modular<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/demountable-architecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demountable<\/a> timber frame into its heritage-protected steel shell.<\/p>\n<p>Originally designed in 1878 by Auguste Mourcou and Henri Contamine as a space for horticultural exhibitions, the Palais Rameau is distinctive for its blending of classical and neo-Byzantine motifs, which surround a grand steel-framed greenhouse at its centre.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2267380 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/atelier-9-81-perrot-richard-insert-palais-rameau-renovation_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Interior view of renovated Palais Rameau in Lille\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>Atelier 9.81 and Perrot &amp; Richard have renovated the historic Palais Rameau in Lille<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atelier981.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Atelier 9.81<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/perrot-richard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Perrot &amp; Richard<\/a> have adapted the building&#8217;s interiors with a modular timber structure that slots into its historic facade and is both highly adaptable and entirely demountable.<\/p>\n<p>It is designed to host classrooms, workshops and labs alongside publicly accessible exhibition and workspaces, after the city leased the building to JUNIA \u2013 the School of Science and Engineering of Lille Catholic University.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2267375 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/atelier-9-81-perrot-richard-insert-palais-rameau-renovation_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Updated interiors by Atelier 9.81 and Perrot &amp; Richard\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>A demountable timber frame has been inserted into the steel frame<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This approach not only respects the history and soul of the place, but also meets tomorrow&#8217;s requirements in terms of sustainability, efficiency and flexibility of spaces,&#8221; explained the team.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;An innovative and demonstrative architecture is proposed, through a modular and scalable project, designed to consider the future,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2267376 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/atelier-9-81-perrot-richard-insert-palais-rameau-renovation_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Palais Rameau renovation \" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Its central hall serves as a public exhibition space<\/p>\n<p>Palais Rameau is shortlisted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/awards\/2025\/shortlists\/categories\/sustainability\/sustainable-renovation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sustainable renovation<\/a> category of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dezeen Awards 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Organised at the edges of the building&#8217;s large central space, the timber post-and-beam structure is infilled with partition walls that are designed to be easily reconfigured to meet the school&#8217;s needs.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/11\/08\/feskekorka-fish-market-gothenburg-white-arkitekter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/feskekorka-white-arkitekter-architecture-gothenburg-sweden-restorations_dezeen_2364_sq-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Feskek\u00f4rka by White Arkitekter\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> White Arkitekter restores Gothenburg&#8217;s fish church\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This has allowed the grand central hall to retain its use as a public exhibition and meeting space.
