{"id":56256,"date":"2025-04-28T01:58:20","date_gmt":"2025-04-28T01:58:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/56256\/"},"modified":"2025-04-28T01:58:20","modified_gmt":"2025-04-28T01:58:20","slug":"major-concerns-over-growing-number-of-asbestos-fibres-in-scotlands-drinking-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/56256\/","title":{"rendered":"Major concerns over growing number of asbestos fibres in Scotland&#8217;s drinking water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SCOTS are facing a growing risk from asbestos in water pipes with more than a quarter of pipes in some areas containing the cancer-causing fibres.<\/p>\n<p>There are fears that the more than half of the asbestos-laden pipes which make up over 11% of the country\u2019s supply are now old meaning there is a chance of fibres making their way into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/drinking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drinking<\/a> water supply.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Water running from a kitchen faucet into a sink.\" height=\"960\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"Getty\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/crop-14377780_b8881b.jpg\" data-caption=\"More than a quarter of pipes in some areas contain cancer-causing fibres\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/crop-14377780_b8881b.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>1<\/p>\n<p>More than a quarter of pipes in some areas contain cancer-causing fibresCredit: Getty<\/p>\n<p>Scottish water estimates it may take until 2072 for all of the pipes to be replaced if the current rate of refitting is maintained.<\/p>\n<p>Asbestos is a known carcinogen to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/humans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">humans<\/a>, meaning it is capable of causing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/cancer-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There is typically considered to be no safe level of exposure to asbestos \u2013 although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health<\/a> officials disagree on the dangers associated with fibres in drinking water.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0World Health Organisation\u00a0does not consider ingestion of asbestos in drinking water to be a serious risk.<\/p>\n<p>However, experts fear we could be on the cusp of a new wave of asbestos cases in the UK but will not know the full extent of the harm for decades.<\/p>\n<p>Adrian Budgen is national head of asbestos and occupational disease at law firm Irwin Mitchell: \u201cI think 50 years to replace these pipes is absurdly long.
