Cruise ship passengers were left floating in the sea after a catamaran sank during a day trip in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n

The small boat was transporting passengers from the “Mein Schiff 1” cruise when it began to sink near to Dominican Republic over the weekend.<\/p>\n

Footage showed a number of people wearing life jackets bobbing in the sea, while the top of the boat could be seen poking above the water.<\/p>\n

The Dominican Navy helped bring them to safety after the 40ft catamaran sank, according to The Sun.<\/p>\n

The nationalities of those who were onboard is currently unknown.<\/p>\n

The local port authority stated: “The Dominican Republic Navy is working closely with local authorities to identify those responsible and take measures to prevent such an incident from happening again.”<\/p>\n

The excursion boat was transporting 55 passengers at the time of the incident, local media reports.<\/p>\n

It had been ferrying people from the cruise ship operated by Tui.<\/p>\n

A spokesman for the travel company said: “The excursion catamaran from an external provider sank during an excursion.”<\/p>\n

The cruise ship is currently on its way to Costa Maya, Mexico, according to tracker service CruiseMapper.<\/p>\n

It can carry up to 2,894 passengers.<\/p>\n

The Dominican Republic saw more than seven million visitor arrivals by plane up to September of this year, figures from the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic show. <\/p>\n
