(Image credit: NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center)<\/p>\n<p id=\"c91645df-a323-4fe7-aa92-685f93bb1bfd\">The sun erupted in spectacular fashion this morning (Nov. 11), unleashing a major X5.1-class solar flare, the strongest of 2025 so far and the most intense since October 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The eruption peaked at 5 a.m. EST (1000 GMT) from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sunspots-formation-discovery-observations\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sunspots-formation-discovery-observations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sunspot<\/a> AR4274, which has been bursting with activity in recent days. The blast triggered strong (R3-level) radio blackouts across Africa and Europe, disrupting high-frequency radio communications on the sunlit side of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"c91645df-a323-4fe7-aa92-685f93bb1bfd-2\">This outburst is the latest in a series of intense flares from AR4274, which also produced an X1.7 flare on Nov. 9 and an X1.2 on Nov. 10. Those flares were accompanied by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coronal mass ejections<\/a> (CMEs) that could combine and impact Earth overnight tonight, possibly triggering strong (G3) <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/auroras\/northern-lights-may-be-visible-in-these-us-states-tonight-nov-10-to-12\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/auroras\/northern-lights-may-be-visible-in-these-us-states-tonight-nov-10-to-12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">geomagnetic storm conditions and widespread auroras<\/a>, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/news\/geomagnetic-storm-watches-11-13-november\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/news\/geomagnetic-storm-watches-11-13-november\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"noopener\">NOAA&#8217;s Space Weather Prediction Center<\/a>. The CME released today could also join the party as it speeds toward Earth at 4.4 million mph. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/news\/another-faster-moving-cme-blasts-sun-early-11-november\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/news\/another-faster-moving-cme-blasts-sun-early-11-november\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"noopener\">NOAA predicts<\/a> the CME could impact Earth around midday on Nov. 12. With this third CME added to the mix, it&#8217;s possible that we could <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSSWPC\/status\/1988294702827802778?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSSWPC\/status\/1988294702827802778?s=20\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\">experience severe (G4) <\/a>geomagnetic storm conditions.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet hawk-ignore\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NASA M2M SWO estimate the speed of the CME at 1856 km\/s &#8211; a very fast CME! X-class<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/solar-flares-effects-classification-formation\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/solar-flares-effects-classification-formation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> solar flares<\/a> are the most powerful kind and the number following the X describes the flare&#8217;s intensity. At X5.1, this latest eruption sits toward the top of the scale.<\/p>\n<p>The eruption sent a surge of X-rays and extreme ultraviolet radiation toward Earth, ionizing the upper atmosphere and causing widespread radio signal degradation. (Image credit: NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center)<\/p>\n<p id=\"748186e6-4ab5-4dd4-ae6e-64dd127b35c2\">This active region has become one of the most prolific solar flare producers of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/solar-cycle-frequency-prediction-facts\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/solar-cycle-frequency-prediction-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Solar Cycle<\/a> 25, marking a fiery peak in what&#8217;s already been an extraordinary week for solar activity.<\/p>\n<p>The CME released this morning during the X5.1 solar flare is forecast to reach Earth on Nov. 12.
