Prison staff at HMP Liverpool are \u201cin danger of losing their visas\u201d as a watchdog warns the situation is causing \u201csignificant anxiety\u201d. Changes to Home Office rules means many of the 42 prison officers recently recruited from overseas are under threat of losing their right to work in the UK.<\/p>\n

In a report published earlier this week, HM Inspectorate for Prisons<\/a> warns that staffing at the prison<\/a> would be impacted \u201cheavily\u201d if the issues were not resolved at a national level.<\/p>\n

In the report, inspectors wrote: \u201cMany of the 42 officers recently recruited from overseas were in danger of losing their visas to work in the UK due to recent changes introduced by the Home Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was creating significant anxiety for those staff involved and would impact heavily on staffing levels if these issues are not resolved at a national level.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several shortcomings were identified in the report on the Walton<\/a> jail, with prisoners<\/a> described as spending their sentences \u201clying on their beds watching daytime TV and taking drugs to pass the time”, as gangs<\/a> \u201ccontinuously\u201d target the prison with drones carrying drugs and other contraband.<\/p>\n

Some of the prison buildings were described as \u201cold and dilapidated\u201d after a \u201cthorough\u201d refurbishment of the prison stalled when the firm contracted to do the work went bust last year.<\/p>\n

The government said it had “inherited a prison system in crisis”, and that it was investing \u00a340m in new security measures this year, including \u00a310m on anti-drone measures such as exterior netting and reinforced windows.<\/p>\n

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: \u201cThis government inherited a prison system in crisis – with drugs and violence rife. While we welcome inspectors\u2019 recognition of HMP Liverpool\u2019s progress to drive down violence, we acknowledge there is more to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are taking action by investing \u00a340m in new security measures this year alone to clamp down on the contraband that fuels violence behind bars – including \u00a310m on anti-drone measures such as exterior netting and reinforced windows.<\/p>\n

“On top of this, the prison is taking immediate action to support staff through bolstered training and mentoring.\u201d<\/p>\n
