{"id":565019,"date":"2025-11-12T04:39:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T04:39:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/565019\/"},"modified":"2025-11-12T04:39:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T04:39:15","slug":"nobel-laureate-urges-china-to-deepen-space-collaboration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/565019\/","title":{"rendered":"Nobel laureate urges China to deepen space collaboration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>China must hardwire long-term scientific endurance into its national strategy if it intends to shape the future of space discovery, a Nobel Prize-winning astrophysicist has suggested.<\/p>\n<p>Reinhard Genzel, a German astrophysicist,\u00a0was awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the center of the Milky Way. Before that, he was awarded the 2008 Shaw Prize in astronomy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During a four-day event organized by the Hong Kong Laureate Forum that concluded on November 8, Genzel told Asia Times in an interview that although Beijing has invested heavily in space projects in the past decade, it\u00a0must convert technological momentum into institutional permanence or risk falling behind in a new global contest where longevity outweighs velocity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have a government which is willing to support scientific research, but will they be willing to support it for a very long time, a sustained effort?\u201d\u00a0Genzel said.\u00a0\u201cYou have to build up a structure that can make that case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that scientific ambitions require institutions built to outlast political cycles.<\/p>\n<p>Genzel is also a co-director of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE), a professor at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) and a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He has been both an observer and architect of international space science collaboration, having worked across continents and institutions that rely on governance models designed for long-term, cross-border scientific alignment.<\/p>\n<p>His commentary arrives at a moment when China has dramatically expanded its national research footprint, particularly in radio astronomy, lunar exploration, deep-space observatio and astrophysical infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about global competition, Genzel said the era when the US singularly steered space science, fueled by Cold War investment and strategic rivalry, has now given way to a more distributed landscape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a US century. China is making very strong strides to follow. Europe has done well, too, especially since we learned to collaborate, not think in terms of \u2018I want my own thing,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Genzel said Europe\u2019s progress had been driven by the cooperative frameworks forged during the Cold War, when shared science initiatives proved more effective than isolated national efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne clever thing coming from the Cold War is that we learned to work together internationally, not as nations competing alone. Otherwise, you could have never done anything,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Amid intensifying strategic competition, Beijing has recently signaled a stronger push for technological self\u2011reliance under its upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/english.news.cn\/20251111\/ab5f2992c35d4e11a63addd04b91b204\/c.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">15th Five\u2011Year Plan<\/a> (2026\u20132030), which prioritizes long\u2011term scientific and innovation capacity.\u00a0Full details of the plan are expected to be unveiled in March 2026.<\/p>\n<p>This comes as US policies continue to restrict direct space collaboration. The Wolf Amendment, enacted in 2011, bars NASA and other agencies from bilateral cooperation with China without congressional approval, excluding the country from the International Space Station (ISS) and the Artemis lunar program.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s radio telescope<\/p>\n<p>Regarding China\u2019s rapid advances, Genzel struck a pragmatic but optimistic tone on the role of collaboration and competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow about worldwide collaboration? We\u2019ve tried this now. In some cases, it\u2019s not always easy, because if the political and structural interests of the partners are too far apart it becomes very difficult to make decisions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, China will and can move forward. Photo: Xinhua<\/p>\n<p>The FAST telescope, completed in 2016, is the world\u2019s largest single\u2011dish radio telescope. Known as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hk01.com\/%E5%8D%B3%E6%99%82%E4%B8%AD%E5%9C%8B\/1011217\/%E4%B8%AD%E5%9C%8B%E5%A4%A9%E7%9C%BCfast%E7%99%BC%E7%8F%BE%E8%B6%85%E9%81%8E900%E9%A1%86%E6%96%B0%E8%84%88%E8%A1%9D%E6%98%9F-%E6%8B%93%E5%B1%95%E4%BA%BA%E9%A1%9E%E8%A7%80%E5%AF%9F%E5%AE%87%E5%AE%99%E8%A6%96%E9%87%8E%E6%A5%B5%E9%99%90\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China Sky Eye<\/a>,\u201d the facility is designed to detect faint radio signals from deep space, search for pulsars, study gravitational waves and support the global hunt for extraterrestrial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Since operations began, FAST has discovered more than 1,000 new pulsars, surpassing the number found by all other international telescopes combined in the same period. Its findings include a record\u2011breaking binary pulsar with a 53\u2011minute orbit and a rare eclipsing millisecond pulsar, offering critical data on stellar evolution, compact binary systems and gravitational wave research.<\/p>\n<p>Asked specifically about FAST\u2019s scientific potential, Genzel offered a technical but measured assessment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn radio astronomy, to get emission at such long wavelengths, you typically need non\u2011thermal processes, which refer to very high\u2011energy electrons moving in magnetic fields,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me as an astrophysicist, it\u2019s not just seeing the signal. The real challenge is interpreting the signal in terms of physics. That becomes easier when you have thermal emission, which we see more in optical or infrared,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not criticism. FAST will be very important, especially for fast radio bursts and transient radio sources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Genzel\u2019s own scientific work reflects the cross\u2011border cooperation he advocates. He disclosed that MPE has built active research links with Chinese institutions, including formal collaboration with the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Peking University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have started a very strong collaboration with Professor Luis Ho in Beijing,\u201d he said. \u201cSeveral of his students have become postdocs in our group, and others have now joined. Photo: Asia Times, Jeff Pao<\/p>\n<p>Genzel framed international participation as a strategic necessity, not diplomacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes the Chinese government prefer to have their own triumph with their own mission, or do they want to be part of a bigger, international mission?\u201d he said. \u201cIf you go to a bigger mission, you cannot claim this was you alone. You have to accept that it has been work together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Genzel said the scale of next\u2011generation science is outgrowing national budgets and political cycles.\u00a0He cited NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/webb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a> (JWST) as an example that \u201cnearly failed several times\u201d before launch and sits at \u201cthe limit of what the US can deliver for basic research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"472\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Hong-Kong-skyline-e1571882091566.jpg\" alt=\"Hong Kong\" class=\"wp-image-204176 size-full\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>\nSign up for one of our free newsletters\n<\/p>\n<p>He said it will be too expensive for China to repeat such missions alone and warned that the <a href=\"https:\/\/elt.eso.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Extremely Large Telescope<\/a> (ELT) in Chile is \u201cat the limit of what Europe can do,\u201d signalling that future projects will require multinational backing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Europe\u2019s next giant leap<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Genzel shared a glimpse into the ELT, Europe\u2019s ambitious next-generation observatory in Chile, while addressing 200 young scientists from all around the world at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hklaureateforum.org\/zh\/about-us\/the-council-and-committee?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=20292022535&amp;gbraid=0AAAAABsqWNsKdHa2P3QdObwbqjNy4qWQ6&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiA2svIBhB-EiwARWDPjldTA4yW5WfbdX1hgrV6o0WRsNXpBajby4C-hXwZhhV5Y5cEVTjN7xoCYjEQAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forum<\/a>, sponsored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leeshaukee.com.hk\/tch\/charity\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lee Shau Kee Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To explain the complexity of the technology behind it, he highlighted the ELT\u2019s four powerful ground lasers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1762922355_473_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube video\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\" nopin=\"nopin\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe send four laser beams into the upper atmosphere to create artificial stars,\u201d he told the audience. \u201cThose guide stars allow us to measure how the atmosphere distorts light, and then we correct for that distortion in real time. Without that, the image is blurred. With it, we can reach incredible sharpness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The four lasers are essential because Earth\u2019s atmosphere constantly warps incoming starlight.
