plans could \u2018kill off\u2019 modern pensions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Government changes to inheritance tax could \u201cdamage the future of pensions in the country\u201d, Baroness Ros Altmann has warned. <\/p>\n<p>From 2027, most unused pension funds and death benefits would be included in the value of a person\u2019s estate for inheritance tax. <\/p>\n<p>But Altmann said these plans \u201ccould kill off modern pensions\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>She said imposing retrospective taxation could deter people from setting money aside for the long-term. <\/p>\n<p>In a blog post, she wrote: \u201cI have been warning that this policy will damage the future of pensions in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftadviser.com\/inheritance-tax\/2025\/11\/5\/altmann-iht-on-pensions-a-disaster-waiting-to-happen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Altmann asked the government<\/a> to \u201crethink their plans\u201d for the future of pensions in a House of Lords Finance Bill sub-committee. <\/p>\n<p>            Recommended<br \/>\n            <a class=\"recommended-article-link\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u2018IHT and pensions is like oil and water, they don&#8217;t mix\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>            <\/a><\/p>\n<p>In her post, published last week, Altmann claimed it is \u201cimpossible\u201d for unpaid executors of wills or personal representatives to find all past pensions and identify beneficiaries within six months, <\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cThe burden of this is being placed mostly on PRs, who will be liable to pay any inheritance tax due within six months, but will not have money from the pension funds to pay it from and will have to deal with all this at a time when they are grieving their lost loved one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Altmann believes the changes will harm \u201cordinary families\u201d rather than close a loophole used by wealthy families. <\/p>\n<p>She said a simpler way to reform the system would be with a flat-rate levy on unused pensions, which could be paid out of the pension fund by the provider and could apply to all pensions, regardless of the IHT position of the estate. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have not been enough warnings about this coming catastrophe,\u201d added Altmann<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not too late to avoid this
