In the first three months of the year alone, there were 320 cases <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"Experts alarmed at &#039;disturbing&#039; rise in highly infectious liver disease\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/uk\/1931705\/Liver-disease-hepatitis-B-rise-NHS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">registered by health officials<\/a> &#8211; a whopping half of all the 636 cases last year, two of which resulted in death. Renata Ciupek from the South Moravian Regional Public Health Authority said: &#8220;Last year&#8217;s rapidly increasing trend has not stopped. With the upcoming travel season, especially for holidays, infection hotspots will present a higher risk of further spread.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-mce-linkchecker-status=\"valid\"><a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"Six early warning signs of silent killer that might go unnoticed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/life-style\/health\/1991625\/causes-of-liver-damage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It particularly affects children,<\/a> people living in hostels or homeless shelters, and marginalised communities. The hardest hit areas have been Prague, Olomuc, Moravia-Silesia, and Usti nad Labem. Kate\u0159ina Fabi\u00e1nov\u00e1 from the Czech National Institute of Public Health said: &#8220;The declining incidence, combined with the absence of routine vaccination, has resulted in a growing number of people without protective antibodies who are highly susceptible to infection. This mainly concerns children and young adults.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The country&#8217;s State Health Institute has urged everyone to adopt strict hygeine standards and get vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>Barbora Mackov\u00e1, chief public health officer, added: &#8220;The best <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"Experts warn of Hepatitis risk from foreign health and dental treatments\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/life-style\/health\/1807747\/undiagnosed-hepatitis-dentist-tattoos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">preventive measure is vaccination<\/a>, ideally in childhood, as full vaccination offers long-term protection.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Immunisation] is particularly recommended for people at higher risk of hepatitis A due to their occupation, travellers to high-risk areas, people with chronic liver conditions, close contacts of infected individuals, and people engaging in high-risk behaviours that facilitate virus transmission.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, the Czech Republic has seen an overall decrease in cases of hepatitis A over the last decade as sanitation infrastructure has improved.<\/p>\n<p>Hepatitis A typically spreads through poor hygeine and <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" title=\"Cause of vomiting bug that&#039;s torn through seaside town finally found\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/uk\/1899806\/Brixham-cryptosporidium-outbreak-school-closed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contimated food or water<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The vaccine currently costs up to 2,000 CZK (\u00a368), but some health insurance providers will partially cover the cost.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms include: a high temperature, flu-like symptoms, upper stomach main, diarrhoea or constipation, itchy or yellow skin.<\/p>\n<p>However, most children and some adults may have no symptoms at all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Czech Republic has seen an increase in hepatitis A cases as the infectious disease spreads.
