{"id":566648,"date":"2025-11-13T01:48:24","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T01:48:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/566648\/"},"modified":"2025-11-13T01:48:24","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T01:48:24","slug":"londons-unemployment-hotspots-revealed-in-interactive-map-as-total-hits-11-year-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/566648\/","title":{"rendered":"London&#8217;s unemployment hotspots revealed in interactive map as total hits 11-year high"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/newsletter_we_final_embed_desktop.png\" alt=\"WEST END FINAL\" width=\"158px\" height=\"158px\" class=\"sc-gytJtb kpUGLA\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The number of unemployed Londoners has jumped to its highest level in 11 years, as hiring across the capital slumps and employers continue to grapple with rising costs.<\/p>\n<p>It compares with a national rate of 5%.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/business\/unemployment-london-reeves-economy-tax-budget-b1257509.html\" title=\"London unemployment hits 11-year high as Reeves National Insurance rise batters pubs, shops and hotels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <\/p>\n<p>An interactive map created by The Standard, using data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/office-for-national-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Office for National Statistics<\/a> (ONS), reveals the number of people claiming jobseeker benefits in each London borough.<\/p>\n<p>The figures, known as the \u201cclaimant count\u201d, measure the number of people claiming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/unemployment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unemployment<\/a>-related benefits at a local authority level. This differs from the official headline unemployment rate.<\/p>\n<p>The claimant count includes individuals receiving Jobseeker\u2019s Allowance and those on Universal Credit who are actively looking for work. <\/p>\n<p>Based on administrative data from the benefits system, it is widely regarded as a key indicator of labour market conditions across the capital.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 1,691,460 people in the UK claimed jobseeker benefits in October 2025, around 4% of working-age people. In London, 357,300 people claimed benefits, or 5.8% of working-age people. <\/p>\n<p>London\u2019s rate is 1.8 percentage points higher than the UK level\u2014 45% above the national average.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which London borough has the highest number of working-age people claiming jobseeker benefits?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/newham\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newham<\/a> (21,385 people, 8.2% of adults) had the highest number of jobseeker benefit claimants in October 2025, followed by Brent (18,335 people, 7.7% of adults), Ealing (17,450 people, 6.8% of adults), Croydon (17,365 people, 6.6% of adults) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/tower-hamlets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tower Hamlets<\/a> (17,260 people, 6.8% of adults). <\/p>\n<p>The City of London (150 people, 1.3% of adults) had the fewest number of jobseeker benefit claimants in October 2025, followed by Richmond upon Thames (3,250 people, 2.6% of adults) and Kensington and Chelsea (3,695 people, 3.5% of adults). <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/office-for-national-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Office for National Statistics<\/a> (ONS) said that, with the skewed levels seen during the Covid-19 years stripped out, this was the highest level of unemployment seen since August 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The ONS said average regular wage growth also pulled back again, to 4.6% in the three months to September, down from 4.7% in the previous three months.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/experts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Experts<\/a> said the weaker-than-expected figures reinforced the case for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/bank-of-england\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bank of England<\/a> to cut interest rates next month.  <\/p>\n<p>London has been hit particularly hard because of its large numbers of relatively low paid workers in hospitality and retail. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The number of unemployed Londoners has jumped to its highest level in 11 years, as hiring across the&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":566649,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7757],"tags":[936,748,393,4884,257,15165,619,16,5664,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-566648","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-london","8":"tag-bank-of-england","9":"tag-britain","10":"tag-england","11":"tag-great-britain","12":"tag-london","13":"tag-office-for-national-statistics","14":"tag-rachel-reeves","15":"tag-uk","16":"tag-unemployment","17":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115539876577403926","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/566648","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=566648"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/566648\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/566649"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=566648"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=566648"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=566648"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
