{"id":568253,"date":"2025-11-13T19:28:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T19:28:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/568253\/"},"modified":"2025-11-13T19:28:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T19:28:13","slug":"eu-commission-to-pull-forward-its-plan-to-end-de-minimis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/568253\/","title":{"rendered":"EU Commission to Pull Forward Its Plan to End De Minimis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/tag\/de-minimis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">De minimis<\/a> may not be long for the world in the European Union. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMaros \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d, who serves as the <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/tag\/european-commission\/\" id=\"auto-tag_european-commission\" data-tag=\"european-commission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Commission<\/a>\u2018s commissioner for <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/tag\/trade-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_trade-2\" data-tag=\"trade-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trade<\/a> and economic security, has called on the European Commission\u2019s Financial Affairs Council to end the bloc\u2019s version of de minimis as soon as possible\u2014ideally early next year.\u00a0European Commission members agreed with his sentiment Thursday, and the bloc will look to collapse its de minimis provision in Q1 of 2026, as \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d suggested in a letter ahead of the meeting. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn remarks following his discussions with the Commission\u2019s finance ministers, \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d said that, once the members of the European Union reach a final agreement on ending the bloc\u2019s de minimis exemption\u2014which currently stands at \u20ac150 ($175)\u2014it will deliver \u201ca strong signal that Europe is serious about fair competition and about defending the interests of its businesses.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d indicated in his remarks that he was thankful for the ministers\u2019 reception to his proposal and  stressed that abolishing it stands to benefit companies operating inside the EU.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cEuropean business, particularly retailers, have repeatedly stressed the need to remove this distortion of competition without delay. This is not a technical issue\u2014it is a question of Europe\u2019s capacity to defend its economic interests,\u201d \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe vowed that the European Commission and the Financial Affairs Council will work with EU member states to deliver \u201ca pragmatic, temporary solution that can be implemented as early as possible\u201d and noted that technical issues should not be the reason the EU fails to collapse its de minimis provision.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tInitially, the EU was set to do away with de minimis in 2028. The newly proposed plan of action will see it dragging that date forward two years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe EU has seen an influx of low-cost imports inbound into the bloc in recent years, particularly coming from <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/tag\/china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China<\/a>. Last year alone, 4.6 million such parcels entered the bloc\u2014more than 90 percent of which came from China, per Commission data. According to the EU Council, nearly two-thirds of small parcels inbound to the EU \u201care undervalued to avoid customs duties on important,\u201d which has raised concerns about competitiveness and the environment among regulators and citizens alike. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tStephanie Lose, Danish minister for economic affairs, said the agreement marks an important turning point for the bloc\u2019s economic position. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI am very pleased that we have reached an agreement on eliminating the \u20ac150 customs threshold. We [will] ensure that duties are paid from the first euro, creating a level playing field for European businesses and limiting the influx of low-cost goods. We also agreed on the need to work towards a temporary solution as soon as possible in 2026,\u201d Lose said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIndividual member states, like France, have <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/topics\/business-news\/shein-child-doll-france-paris-controversy-1234787526\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rallied against<\/a> the proliferation of China-founded e-commerce companies like<a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/tag\/shein\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Shein<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/tag\/temu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Temu<\/a>. In a comment to the AFP, French Finance Minister Roland Lescure lauded politicians\u2019 agreement on\u00a0moving forward the effort to abolish de minimis. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThis is a key step for the protection of European consumers and the internal market to fight more effectively to prevent dangerous products and those that do not comply with our European regulations,\u201d Lesucre reportedly said. \u201cWe have taken a major step for the economic sovereignty of the European Union.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShein and Temu\u2014or their customers\u2014could face specific fees or duties on parcels inbound into EU member states in the near term. That\u2019s particularly interesting as both companies have worked to expand their market share in the bloc in recent years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNeither Shein nor Temu returned Sourcing Journal\u2019s request for comment on \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d\u2019s assertions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe push comes several months after U.S. President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/topics\/trade\/de-minimis-trade-tariffs-trump-china-ups-ncto-executive-order-1234758383\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">killed the nation\u2019s de minimis exemption<\/a>\u2014which allowed parcels valued at less than $800 to enter the country duty free\u2014via executive order, in favor of subjecting those shipments to tariffs. U.S. lawmakers also included the squashing of de minimis in 2027 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcingjournal.com\/topics\/trade\/national-council-of-textile-organizations-de-minimis-republicans-bill-1234754056\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Republicans\u2019 megabill<\/a>, which passed and was signed into law over the summer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"De minimis may not be long for the world in the European Union.
