US stocks fell sharply on Thursday, led by a decline in tech stocks as the end of the longest-ever US government shutdown<\/a> was met by concern from investors that the Federal Reserve’s plans for a December rate cut might be in doubt.<\/p>\n

When the closing bell rang on Wall Street, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC<\/a>) suffered the sharpest losses, falling 2.3%. The benchmark S&P 500 (^GSPC<\/a>) fell 1.6%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI<\/a>) dropped 1.6%, or 797 points, to backtrack on its second record close<\/a> in a row.<\/p>\n

President Trump late Wednesday signed a bill ending the record-setting 43-day US federal shutdown, but White House officials said economic reports delayed by the closure “will be permanently impaired”<\/a> and will likely never be released.<\/p>\n

Data on inflation and the jobs market in October are up in the air, though Trump adviser Kevin Hassett said<\/a> Thursday that the jobs data may be released \u2014 but without a read on that month’s unemployment rate.<\/p>\n

That uncertainty about the economic outlook is complicating bets on interest-rate cuts in December and next year, as it could impact the Federal Reserve’s thinking.<\/p>\n

Markets were pricing in<\/a> a roughly 50-50 chance of a reduction at policymakers’ meeting next month after a wave of hawkish commentary from officials on Wednesday<\/a>, compared with around 95% odds a month ago.<\/p>\n

Uncertainty over the path of interest rates also pushed investors away from some of this year’s biggest winners, with AI leader Nvidia (NVDA<\/a>) falling over 3.5% and Tesla falling more than 6% to mark the sharpest losses among the “Magnificent Seven” tech stocks.<\/p>\n

Disney (DIS<\/a>) stock also fell over 7.5% after the company reported disappointing earnings <\/a>before the market open.<\/p>\n
