{"id":569443,"date":"2025-11-14T08:24:38","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T08:24:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/569443\/"},"modified":"2025-11-14T08:24:38","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T08:24:38","slug":"unc-studios-challe-cafe-in-kyoto-fuses-japanese-and-mexican-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/569443\/","title":{"rendered":"UNC Studio&#8217;s Challe cafe in Kyoto fuses Japanese and Mexican design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Interiors firm UNC Studio has transformed a traditional wooden house in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/kyoto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kyoto<\/a> into a Japanese-Mexican fusion cafe and eatery with a bold, all-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/red\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">red<\/a> interior.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/challe_kyoto\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Challe<\/a> cafe, which features on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/awards\/2025\/shortlists\/interiors\/bar-and-cafe-interior\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shortlist for Dezeen Awards 2025<\/a>, serves speciality coffee, Japanese tacos and churros to customers in Kyoto&#8217;s Kamigyo Ward.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2268810 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/unc-studio-challe-cafe-wooden-house-kyoto_dezeen_2364_col_8-1-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Challe cafe in Kyoto, Japan\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>Challe cafe features on the shortlist for the 2025 Dezeen Awards<\/p>\n<p>The interior design by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uncstudio.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNC Studio<\/a> mirrors the cafe&#8217;s concept of combining Japanese and Mexican elements, while retaining the character of the traditional machiya townhouse.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In renovating an old Japanese wooden house, we did not want to create an orthodox Mexican image,&#8221; explained studio founder Keiji Kadota. &#8220;Instead, we imagined a fusion of modern Mexican and Japanese style.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2268809 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/unc-studio-challe-cafe-wooden-house-kyoto_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"UNC Studio-designed cafe in Kyoto\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The Kyoto spot fuses Japanese and Mexican design<\/p>\n<p>The long, narrow property features a typical shopfront on the ground floor, which can be entirely opened or closed off using full-height wooden doors.<\/p>\n<p>The renovation retained most of the building&#8217;s existing pillars, beams and other structural elements. The low-ceilinged ground floor is given a greater sense of height and volume by introducing a void that connects this space with the room upstairs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2268814 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/unc-studio-challe-cafe-wooden-house-kyoto_dezeen_2364_col_7-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"UNC Studio-designed cafe in Kyoto, Japan\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>The cafe is set in a traditional wooden house<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The visual continuity created by the atrium encourages interactive communication between the ground floor counter and the first floor seating area,&#8221; Kadota said.<\/p>\n<p>Materials removed as part of the transformation were reused wherever possible, including columns that were converted into shelves and benches, sometimes ome of which are supported by salvaged cornerstones.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2268816 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/unc-studio-challe-cafe-wooden-house-kyoto_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Red-hued interior\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The entire interior is coloured a deep shade of red<\/p>\n<p>The entire interior is coloured a deep shade of red using paint made with persimmon tannins and a pigment made from iron rust.<\/p>\n<p>According to the architects, the rich red hue contributes to a &#8220;Mexican atmosphere&#8221; that fuses with the historical Japanese architecture to give a &#8220;unique depth&#8221; to the space.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2268817 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/unc-studio-challe-cafe-wooden-house-kyoto_dezeen_2364_col_2-1-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Distinctive floor tiles\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>Distinctive tiles were custom-made by a ceramics studio<\/p>\n<p>The ground floor&#8217;s distinctive tiles were custom-made by a ceramics studio using a red glaze that complements the rest of the interior. The material was chosen for its ability to develop an attractive patina over time.<\/p>\n<p>Stools surrounding the communal table were made by combining solid wooden blocks of varying shapes.
